I work at a primary school, and was approached to see if I know anyone with ponies that they could use for the school fete.....this got me thinking, surely there are rules governing insurances licence etc, does the schools insurance cover it or do the pony owners need to have their own???
Any ideas????

Personally I wouldn't touch it with a barge pole, whatever my insurance said. The UK is now such a litigious society and common sense is so far out the window I wouldn't dare put my horse into a situation where the public was involved however 'bombproof' he was (and he isn't!)

We decided not to at our school fete for similar reasons, you would need public liability insurance and even then if its for hire or reward you may not be covered. Its a H and S nightmare.

I did it for our primary school about 10 years ago. The PTA checked and we were covered on their insurance as long as we didn't charge! So get the PTA to check with their insurers. We offered free pony rides, but charged £1 for a carrot for the pony. Had to buy quite small carrots though otherwise ponies would have exploded

OMG i helped with pony rides at a church fete today, a lady got on one of the ponies, pony started to panic, lady fell off dislocated shoulder

There is now major worrying going on about being sued. It's sad really but i don't think the way things are these days (i'm 23

) that pony rides can continue. There is absolutely no way i would do it again

My sister and I used to get roped in to doing pony rides at the local school fete as our mum was the caretaker. Luckily we never had any problems but I'm not sure I'd be so keen nowadays for the reasons other people have said.

However, my son had a donkey ride last week at a local event (Lions day I think) and we had to sign a disclaimer before he got on which I suppose is the way to go.
