), i'm considering a new saddle investment. What I need is a 15/15.5" for my native type ponio that is comfortable for me to also ride in (and I'm absolutely committed to getting a saddle fitters' advice too so saddle is right for ponio first and foremost). I know you can get such saddles made for you and please forgive me for being nosy, but for those of you that did, how much did you spend; who designe the saddle for you; and was it worth it? Or have you ever come across such saddles second hand? I'm getting the impression that made to measure might be the only route because such saddles are pretty rare. What do you think?

I'm not sure 100% if my saddle is one of those you describe but it came with my boy when I bought him and was almost brand new (3 months old). I'm an adult and he's a native pony/cob x. It's a Morris & Nolan saddle and looking at their website I think they call it now the Connemara Junior Competitor. Mine was a 16.5". I find it very comfortable and others have said so too when ridden my horse. It was made to measure though via a local saddler and the previous owner paid £485 for it new (that was back in 2003). Hope that's of some help.

For a dressage saddle for my pony I couldn't fit in anything smaller than 16.5" Im not Huge

But the others put me in the wrong place on him. I di have 15" vintage leather one I ride the section B's in, and I don't have a problem with it and its not uncomfortable but I am aware it isn't ideal...

I had my saddle made to measure for my 14.2 arab. Having tried somewhere close to 30 saddles and not finding one that fitted us both it was really my only choice. I had an extended flapon mine as I have quite long legs and the cantle is cut down so it matches my exact needs. It cost around £600 7 years ago (this included the visits to measure both me and the pony and checks after 6 weeks to ensure all was ok). It was made by a local person who makes all their saddles to measure.

How small is the pony? our ponies 13.1 and 14.1 have 17" saddles, which is plenty big enough for my average sized bum. Can the pony take bigger than a 15.5 inch saddle?

He's a 148cm connemara cross. The saddle i have was 'professionally' fitted - but with the benefit of hindsight, the saddler didn't really do his job that well in that it doesn't really fit me (GRRRR) - hindsight is a great thing

It all depends on the length of your legs, the size of your bum and the Width of the horse.
I am 5'1" and used a Jefferies 16 inch (cut-back head) on two Ridden (hogged) Show Cobs, various Show Hunters and when qualifying point-to-pointers.
I would go for a decent 2nd-hand saddle if you can find one. Another very pertinent question is - for Showing, Dressage, Jumping - or are you looking for a GP?

As a proud member of the pony squishing club I can highly reccomend the Ideal Working Hunter Pony, the 15" is a generous fit and actually mesures 15 1/2" and suits my Darty down to the ground and as a rider is suited to both flatwork and jumping. They're not cheap I paid £575 7 years ago and I think you're looking nearer to £800 now! I'm surprised you can't have a slightly more roomy saddle though if he's 14.2, my pony is only 12.2 which is why I am so restricted think I'd be much more comfy in something like 16"+ which I'd hope to be in with something 13.2 plus.

My daughter has a 13.2 very chunky welsh c and after trying several saddles we ended up buying a made to measure Saddle Company Verona WH.

It is a 16.5" pony model based on a cob tree, with adult flaps and the fitter recommended a square cantle as it gives a bit extra room in the seat. The saddle fitter said that as he is quite short coupled he wouldn't be able to take anything any longer. She also commented that he is a saddle fitters nightmare lol!

I am surprised that your pony cannot take a bigger saddle unless it is very short in the back. My 13.3 NF has I think a 16.5 inch saddle and it is fine (I think it is 16.5 but it might even be 17.5). I think it is 16.5 as when I got him fitted the saddler asked me if anyone else was going to ride him apart from me and I said no so probably did get the smaller saddle - I am quite tiny for an adult and so I doubt I would have a 17.5 but can't remember!.

Any way the brand I have is a Saddle Company Verona WH saddle.

Im with SO1, I rode a small pony (12h) in my old 15.5 inch stubben the other day. Jumped and fitted in fine.
Previous to that my 13.2 was ridden in my normal pessoa (17.5 inch)

All 148's i have ridden have gone in a 17/17.5 inch.
