have started looking for a family pony to share with daughter and niece - they are both 12 and so pony needs to really be under 15hh.

I have tried a 14.1 welshie who I am quite taken with, he felt quite small but im used to 16hh +

am tempted to make owners an offer but only reservation is size - am not sure if its a simply that im not used to a smaller horse and in time it will feel more normal or whether I am just genuinely under horsed.

if it helps to say - my plan would be hacking and a bit of low level local showing, mainly in hand, and the girls could take him to PC and have lessons on him this year, then next year I will start to let the girls take over whilst i focus on my youngster and will just hop on him every so often when i fancy a little hack.

im about 5ft5/6

what do you guys think????

about to get on - me standing behind him

Hmm nice as he is I do think you are slightly under horsed there. You'd be ok if you only rode him occasionally.

Sorry, he is a very nice looking chap! Be interested to know if other people agree or disagree with me. :)

Your weight on him is fine. But you are tall. My reservations with a horse this small is that your balance wouldn't not be as good as the pony is too small for you.
Looks like a lovely chap though!

Agree with this but have to say....................what a lovely pony

Hi there,

Are you sure pon is 14.1? Anyway as Damnation said, weight wise no problems, height wise balance may be an issue but if you are happy then I would say why not?

Andrea

Looks like a lovely type of pony for the children but i'm in agreement with others that say he is a little small to carry you comfortably.

i'm going to go against the grain here and say i think you'd be absolutely fine, i used to work for a dealer and i am taller than you nearer the 5ft 8 mark and i'd regularly ride 13hh upwards i was very lightweight back then and i dont feel any of them ever struggled, i consider myself to be a fairly good rider so it didnt upset my balance either. If the pony is managing and you are happy i say go for it. What a nice looking pony that is to :)

I agree he looks a lovely pony, I took over my daughters pony 14hh when she outgrew him and did every thing on him, bloodhounding, team chasing, hunting and XC but he had a v good shoulder, I am 5' 6" and 9 stone but have shortish legs so was able to balance myself, I now have a NF pony 13.5hh with a good depth of girth who I was going to bring on and sell but she is such a poppet I'm keeping her though probably won't jump her as virtually no shoulder, I'm sure weight won't be a problem if your just hacking her but your legs maybe a tad too long, it will improve your seat/reactions though ha ha. I do have a horse I can jump but ponys are so much more fun and will keep my going till I'm in my 80's god willing

As someone else has said, are you sure that he is 14.1?? My 14/14.2 mare looks much bigger than that and Im 5'9" and look to be a fair bit bigger round the girth than you!

Excuse my face! x

I would say you were a little tall, maybe go for something a little stockier? He looks lovely though! As said before, are you sure he's 14.1hh? I'm about the same height as you and ride a 14.2hh who's about the same build and it seems to be about the right-ish size for me. xx

40 years ago nobody would have looked twice. nowdays anything under16.2 is a midget. Then , 16.2 was a giant.Ponies are built to carry weight . I just love rosehip,s pony, you couldnt squish her with a steamroller:eek:She is a real babe:cool:

Hi Lexi

He looks lovely I can see why you are keen. With regard to size I would say you would be fine on him you certainly don't look ridiculous! I forgot to mention today that my friend is about 5ft 7/8 and she has a 14.2 mare who is a similar build maybe a tiny bit wider than Tilly and although some people would say she is too tall they are a great team together. I would say go for it and can't wait to meet the handsome chap.

I would query the pony's size too. My daughter is 5'6" , she didn't look much bigger on her 13hh pony than you do on that fella. Lovely looking pony though.

Pony squisher!!! :D:D:D

That pony is no way 14hh... you have a lovely figure my dear but height wise you do look a bit topply...

I am with the check height camp.

I am only 5ft2 and my NF mare is 14.1 and i look just right on her. My friend is 5ft8 got on, and trying not to sound rude, didnt look as big on her as u do on the pony.

I wouldve put him at the 13.1 - 13.2 mark to be honest....

Sounds silly but can you remember where his back came up to on your body and measure up to there, if you dont want to ask the current owner!?
