I'm still looking around at stallions for a potential 2010 foal. On my travels i've come across Hilkens Black Delight and think he is a super sort. The mare is a 16.1hh WB X with a nice amount of bone; not too much, not too little. Does anybody know if these sorts of crosses work? I would hate to end up with a small horse, that is an awkward size, with tiny legs and a big old body - but Hilkens Black Delight seems to have a nice amount of substance to him anyway.

Any ideas? Obviously size is a difficult one to gage, but do you think this would leave with an awkward sized horse? I was thinking that there is a market for smart, small dressage horses if the foal was not going to make the height for me to keep - but i always think that the 15hh region is a difficult one, with a distinctly limited market compared to say 14.2hh or 15.2hh!

Cheers

Kerensa also has a Ousbek mare (Int JA) out of a 16.2 ISH mare at hers!

Ousbek crossed out very well to horse mares, I am intouch with the people with the Ousbek out of a Dallas mare, they are delighted with her even if they do call her Spring a ling ling... lol and the Ousbek out of a Hannovarian mare by Voltaire is now in the ownership of the Mendozas.

I was tempted to use Georgeo II or Top Yellow on one of my horse mares this year but have spent quite enough on stud fees already!

I have tried breeding down from a larger mare and to be honest if your mare is a true 16.1 you will actually stuggle to get her to produce a good 153 as in my experience they always tend to grow bigger than expected! If it is a 153 you wnat for yourself probably best to buy one that already measures

For me personally, i'd like something 15.3hh or over but think that there is a market for a smaller dressage horse should the horse not make the right height for me personally. It would be a lovely surprise if the foal did grow bigger, but just wanted to cover my back if the foal only turned out quite small, if that makes sense. The mare is a maiden, too, so i don't know how much influence that really has on the size of the foal?

Being a maiden won't alter the foal adult height I wouldn't say, various people told me to expect a small foal this year as it was my mares first, but the mare got bigger and bigger and gave birth to a very leggy huge colt! Mare is 15.2, stallion is just under 16.2 and foal will be around 16.2plus we believe!!! I'd say look at the size of the generations on both dam and sires side. My mare is only 15.2 but her g.sire is 16.3 and the stallions sire is 17hh so I knew there was big genes there and always a chance of a bigger foal!

Was it me who pointed out Hilkens Black delight to you? I've mentioned him a few times on this forum to people after a nice pony stallion. He looks amazing and I would definately consider him if I wanted the opportunity of a smaller foal!!

I probably saw him mentioned on here to lead me to him - he really does look a super sort. I would probably not have considered putting her to a small stallion if it were not seeing him, but he is now definately on the list now - we just have to figure out a 'game plan' for the mare (it's all a bit complicated. argh!).

Her sire was a little larger at 16.3hh and her dams height (as per NED online) is only 157cms , and the heights of her parents are not written down anywhere.....http://www.allbreedpedigree.com/oakmhor+lady+grace

Hilkens Black Delight has some larger relatives a little further down the line, but directly they are all 14.2hh ish.

Hmm....food for thought...

In my experience the resulting heights have been...

16.2 mare to 14.2 stallion = 15.1
16.1 mare to 14.2 stallion = 15h now (4yo) but looks like making 15.1 as slight bum high
and
different 16.1 mare to 14.2 stallion = looks like making 15.2

I have bred others but not in contact with them to know there final heights.

now on the other foot I put my 16.2 stallion over my 14.2 JA and he looks set to be 16.2, he's bigger than all the ones by big stallions out of big mares! lol.

I also have a warmblood mare, she is currently in foal to a 13.2 Show Pony, with a view of breeding a 15h Show Riding type.
But i now want to brred dressgae horses. I was blown away with hilkens black delight, but as he is 14.2 & though te mare has a height cretificate at 153cm she is FULL UP, so i tink i would get a 15h, which would make a fab show horse, but i dont know it it would fetch the money of a dreaage horse!

I've bred 2 by the 14.1hh German Sports Pony Bernwode Brokat. Dam is a 16hh TB/ID type.

Eldest is now 5 and 15.2hh; younger is 4 and almost as big.

Both have good confirmation - elder got 3x 1st Premiums at Futuritys and won his class twice at BD Breed Show (younger not shown) - and both are 'in scale' body to legs/neck/head etc.

I'm delighted to have got 2 lovely youngsters at the perfect size for a 5'2" person

I'd attach a picture but I don't know how!!

I used my 12.2 sports pony stallion on my 17hh mare last year, my yearling is looking to make around 15.2 as he is a piece bigger than my foals due to make approx 14 to 14.2hh but he is very smart and has very good movement. I realistically want to bring her size down as although she was my competition mare she was always too big for me!!!!

We used Casino Royale K who also stands with HBD last year and although out of a pony mare the foal is stunning with the most athetic movement. CRK is all pony breeding whereas HBD does have horse lineages further back.

Top Yellow is also a super pony with substance we have a super yearling by him.

Bernwode Brokat is also someone to consider, he is also super and has a good comp record.

I havent found maiden mares to really make a difference on size, even if they are slightly smaller born they catch up quickly.

We went with the 12.2hh to try hard to keep under the 15.2hh mark which I feel it will but the mares do predict the size of the foals in my opinion. I certainly would say with a 14.2hh youd be more likely to get up to the height you wanted.

I have just purchased a lovely up to height (13.2) Section B stallion to use on my warmblood mares. I have 2 fillies that are warmblood horse breeding and only stand 14 and 14.1 as 2 and 3 year olds. They will be using in my sports pony breeding program.

So I would be very interested in seeing sports ponies out of warmblood mares, by pony stallions too.
