We went to a local show today, in the line up for the lead rein class the judge mentioned that my pony looked a little stiff from behind and asked if he has arthritis, he is only five so didn't think this was the case, to be honest because he is a big barrel on tiny legs I thought this was just his normal gait as he has always had an odd walk and shrugged it off, but when friends daughter got on him for the First pony class I took note and thought actually he does look a little stiff, he seemed fine in trot, he has never been one to stride out and has short choppy little strides, do you think there could be an underlying issue there? he has started to buck a little in the show ring but put this down to excitement. should I be getting his back checked in case he has tweaked it? he was wearing a cub saddle at the time so its not saddle issues. Thank you in advance x

definitely get a chiro out to have a look at his back. They will tell you if they feel there are underlying issues that need a vet. My horse used to have an odd gait behind. In his case it was due to problems with his pelvis which are now sorted and he no longer has the odd walk. A pony at our yard is currently undergoing sessions with the chiro for the same sorts of issues and often looks stiff behind when moving.
