Someone commented today that one of our ponies must be worth a lot more that we bought him for 9 months ago and it made me wonder. I have no intension of selling yet but he will be grown out of at some stage. So I am curious as to what you good people think he is worth, promise not to take any offence if the answer is very little - lol.

He is:
12.2 Dartmoor x Exmoor 7 years old, very pretty bay with Exmoor eyes (like he has eye liner on). Friendly, easy to catch, lives in or out and on very little. He is what I describe as a confident 1st ridden, ie no nastiness but does need riding. He can nap in school but not dirtily and my novice son rides him through with lots of shouty voice. He jumps, again has to be ridden at it, not a point and shoot but as long as the kid kicks he will attempt it. Loads and travels well. A bit nervy with vets/farriers but a calm manner fine and getting better. Does pony club rallies off lead with no silliness, likewise shows. Can be lead off a horse with or without a jockey. Can be a bit spooky/green ie looks at drains and big lorries but does not spin etc.

Ideas on a post card!

The napping will hold his value down, shouting is all very well but not what someone coming to try him will want to see happening, does he hack safely off lead? if not and he is spooky on the lead I would say around £800 max, if you can get him over the napping and hacking without spooking other than at something new, not looking at any traffic or drains that are always there, the vet/ farrier issue is not a problem as a child will not be expected to be in charge, then you could ask more so by next year with more miles on the clock he could be worth more, probably double my first estimate, depending on where you are as the prices vary considerably.

Thanks, yes the napping is his main fault. He hacks off the lead on bridle paths etc but my son is not hacking on roads or open fields yet so untried there. We only paid £500 for him and mostly as I thought he was cute. Due to his breeding/type I am hoping he will last my son some time as even as my kids are tall he should carry him ok. I am hoping another 2 years min and in that time with doing lots of pony club etc he should get better and better.
Pony values seem to vary widely and I know anything is only worth what people will pay!
