Hi All,

I have a pony with COPD and have been advised by my vet to use an equine inhaler with clenil to control it. Did have a course of ventapulmin but I am told that they become immune to this eventually and in the long run a little lung damage is caused each time once you are at the ventapulmin stage.
Does anyone have any experience of using these? Have they been effective? Any recommendation on where to buy them?
I already have him out 24/7, give him haylage, on a herbal supplement and don't over rug him.
The masks are expensive so don't want to invest in one if they really don't work.
Thanks

I ve got the breatheazy one, have had and used it successfully for 5 years now. Great invention - cost £250 or thereabouts so has worked out a great investment so far :) I did see another make at blair last year which I would look at for my next one-think it was made by the Haygain people.

My vet bought in an inhaler specially for me as it was cheaper than the one they usually get, but as my insurance wouldn't pay for it they shopped around. The little cannisters to go in the inhaler came from Boots on prescription as it was cheaper than their usual supplier. All in all the inhaler and 2 cannisters was abour £145. Will check at yard tomorrow what make they are etc if that helps.

I can't say how effective it is as this is the first week we have used it "properly" as my horse takes a while to get used to stuff like this. It still makes him jump every time i puff the puffer cannister thingy! The jumps are just a bit less dramatic than they were a few days ago!!!

I've just called it a day with my Sec D who's only 7 :-( Can't get anything over his nose at all so resorted to pollen ease supplement in his feed & leaving him be during summer months. I know the pumps can work well but not an option for me. Mine has pollen allergy though.

Thanks Juilette - it would be very helpful to know what make is it and where they purchased it. I have looked at the aerohippus (about £100) and also the aeromask (much more expensive).
Have managed to get the puffers through an online company so cheaper than through the vets. Did Boots give the medication on a prescription from the vets? Maybe cheaper for me to do that in the future.
Any info greatly received.

Sorry to hear Ellie that it hasn't worked for your Section D. Pollen is a tough one - a friend of mine had a horse suffering with a pollen allergy and she used to ride and turn him out with a nose net, just in case that helps.

My vet wrote the prescription, sent his receptionist to pick it up from Boots and had it ready for me to collect - what a star!!!

Will check the make etc for you tomorrow.

You need to be aware that my vet reckons only 80% of people find they have success with them, some horses just won't accept having them on their nostril. My lad is gradually getting there, we made so much progress i didn't need a head collar tonight - result!!

Hey, my pony has an inhaler he has one of these...

My vet got it for me!

It has been brilliant. Really helps him. He was very anti it to start with but with persistance and also the brib of carrots he got it! Now he will take it, no headcollar, in middle of field if he has too, even does big breathes bless him.

I find it cheaper to get a perscription from the vet and get the inhalers from my doctors pharamacy! One is really cheap (like £3) but i have another which is about (£57)... But totally worth it.

Good luck
