My little mare has got such dry skin, flaky & often itchy for her. Has anyone any ideas/tips to help improve her skin.

Grooming does help a bit. She has linseed oil but I am not sure if this has helped her at all.

Thank you

I don't wish to be rude but do check for lice. Micronised linseed might help her skin better than pure oil. Most of the oils are just that, oil. Whole linseed has many more 'goodies' in it. Also a good balancer might help.

My section c youngster came to me with very mild sweet itch, which over the winter has been some very flaky patches. I started feeding him Feedmark's Equidermis Plus a few weeks ago and the flaky patches have gone already. Might be worth a go?

Get her allergy tested. Quite a few vets do it nowadays, they basically inject tiny amounts of different allergens under the skin of the neck and if the horse is allergic, a tiny swelling appears. I went about 4 years with a Welsh D I used to own thinking it was sweet itch that made him so itchy but turned out he was allergic to most grasses, mould and dust!

I also have a mare with extremely dry skin, mane and tail. Very dry, flaky but not itchy. I treated her with lice powder, with mite powder, went back to basics and even stopped giving her carrots as I was told that some horses react to them! Over the last two years I have tried adding various things to her feed without any joy. Soya oil and then molasses didn't help. Her coat looked glossy but her skin was still dry and flaky. I managed her last year by bathing her with conditioning shampoo which was ok during the summer but impossible during the cold winter months. I have three other horses who all have soft, glossy coats and no problems. Two of which are 20 years old who look and act like 5 year olds. I have owned horses for over 40 years and have never come across such dry skin. I have just this week started my mare on Equidermis Plus. Has anyone used it with success? Has anyone tried Bailey's Outshine? Ty for any help :)

I have had horse s for many years and have always fed boiled linseed at least twice a week you can buy at most horse feed stores it is cheap and easy to cook , I soak and then cook the next day. it is high in omega 3 essential fatty acids so works great for skin and hair , horse s love it I hope this helps

Try feeding brewers yeast with or without micronised linseed as well.
It's a really good digestion aid and will help with getting a good skin and hooves.
A horse only looks well on the outside if it is well on the inside.

Thanks for your ideas. I have had my little mare for just over two years now. She was a rescue, very nervous but not nasty. She has changed completly in herself and has joined our oldies and will be with me for life. I have tried seaweed, Brewers yeast and Linseed to no avail. I do believe that health comes from the inside and am disappointed that she doesn't look as good as she should. I am giving the Equidermis Plus a 3 month trial but am always open to try anything to help her. The only good thing is that it doesn't seem to make her itch. Has anyone tried Baileys Outshine?
