Hoping for a bit of advice. I am off to have a look at a companion pony that is being rehomed/free to good home. The current owners took him in years ago, when he was found straying and has been kept mainly as a pet. They are not horse people and they said it hasn't got any papers. How does this all stand legally. And how easy will it be for me to get papers for the pony if I get it.

Thanks!!!

He needs to have a passport (papers are irrelevant) as it is illegal for any horse or pony in the UK to not have one. There are various ways of being able to get a passport though.

Do you no what breed it is?

I thought you applied to the appropriate breed association, or a general association...

Sorry not much help!!

pleasure horse society are still issuing, or you can get it passported at some auctions by staff there. there are still thousands out there without passports, mostly 'garden ponies' I think

It should be easy enough for you to apply for and get a passport. However Im not sure where you stand if they are giving the pony to you as in law its not legal to sell a horse without one. The passport doesnt prove ownership, only that the pony is who it says it is so you might be wise to contact one of the PIO's before taking the pony home just to make sure the owners dont need to apply for one first.

Id be interested to know what happens with this, does gifting an animal make it different to buying one?

Oh and remember if you are transporting him to a new home he WILL need a passport no matter who applies for one for him.

I bought a pony about 18months ago (dont know if things have changed since) but I called the vet and he came down vetted and documented the pony and then applied for a passport on my behalf it was really simple, check with your vet they will know the procedure.

Thanks for all your help! I have been to see the pony and met the wife of the man I spoke to this morning. I turns out the pony does have a passport which is a reliefe. So I am icking him up on Saturday. On the agreement that he goes back if we don't want him any more. Very exciting, very cute and little and furry!!
