I have a Welsh D pony who has no clothes and rather than buying lightweight, middleweight and heavyweight T/O's I was wondering if any rugs are available like the summer / winter duvets you can get that you just attach to each other dependent on temp.

Good question. Well, if you make sure that the very outer is properly waterproof - 1680D or ballistic nylon - that's a good start.

I know Premier Equine do linery thingies, as do Rambo (I think that the rug in question is the Duo).

How big is your pony in rug size? (There is a reason for the seemingly random question)

Rambo, weatherbeeta and premier equine all do rugs where basically you get a outer rug and a variety of inner linings in various weights. A good way of doing it especially if you can use rug in and out. I think you can with premier equine and they're good rugs xxx

Will you be clipping? Has he been rugged in the past?

Yes he's been rugged in the past and no he won't be clipped.

Reason he has no clothes is that I took him over / bought him from lady who had run out of money and his clothes were too small, ripped, torn and only fit for the bin so thats where they went.

He is up for sale though and don't want to spend a fortune if poss buying loads of rugs.

Look at Bucas they are fab rugs. I have a necked which supposedly does -5oc to +10oc, a without a neck which is for 5oc to 20oc and another necked one which does 0oc to 15oc. I have never used them for the right upper end or lower end of their ranges but whenever I bring them in they are always the perfect temp so really I should have been less of a pansy and not bought thicker/heavier rugs for the lower temps as I am now sure the Bucas' would handle them brilliantly. I believe if you look online you can see the range of rugs and what temperatures they are suitable for :). All/some can also be used as stable rugs. The rugs fit great and have lasted well although I would recommend to avoid the silver one as it became mud/poo stained quickly. I have a shiny blue one that still looks fab and a green one that looks average but rug strength wise they are all going strong with no rips etc. The only
way they could make them better IMO would be to include a zipped in removable fleece liner as if you are using them constantly you could then wash so them so much easier whilst still using. I often put a waffle or fleece under mine. The only downside to having one rug is if pony does manage to have a mudbath and you really need to dry the rug out... :( so I would probably have an emergency spare (rainsheet?) to put over top of stable rug to still allow turn out while rug drys. Hope that helps :).

or just keep a firm eye on ebay to buy some cheap second hand rugs to tide you over. I love Bucas but they are not cheap! and if was producing to sell on I would not be so inclined to fork out either..

My trick for that (horses changing over) is to buy 6ft3s they seem to fit most things! Mine all fit a 15.1hh cobXtb, a 16hh chunkyish ish, a 16.1hh exrace tb, and a 16.2/3hh 7/8tb 1/8 id. Dont really understand it but barring ponies and huge ones they seem to work on most things :p. Currently looking at a solid 17.2hh & thinking if i buy i dont think i can squeeze her in a 6ft3! Lol.

If you are not clipping him. why do you need to rug him especially if he is a welsh Section D? If you wanted to rug him I would only be buying a lightweight rug.

I rug my unclipped TB in a lightweight rug in the winter because he is a really dirty horse, otherwise I wouldn't bother.

I have just been drooling over the Bucas Smartex rugs, i really like the look of them. Its for my girl who is out on loan as a broodmare so i have not brought her anything for ages and thought a lightweight one of these would be fab for her in the winter - in fact she may even get a new headcollar and leadrope too:D -.

If the rug stays on the horse when it is muddy does it leak through?

Preimer equine!

I just worked it out and I think I'd save a fair few bob on rugs this year

And they are really good, had a 450x something, the best turnout rug I've ever brought

He's a Welsh D and no being clipped - seriously I would only use a MW max on him and only if you were planning to ride through winter. Natives don't need to be rugged, even our TB broodies are out 24/7 until January with NO RUGS!

Let him get a nice woolly coat and safe yourself some money. He'll be fine. I hate seeing natives rugged, but especially this early in the year.

I have the shiny blue m/w(?) smartex and love it :D. Mines out in it tonight actually as its meant to go chilly & shes clipped now. No the mud shouldnt soak through I think its more that some (all?) of the bucas range use breathability to interchange air to maintain optimum temperature and also something to do with the suns rays hitting the rug material? Tbh its more just my personal choice that I wash and change them when they get really muddy :p.

I have the Rambo Duo and would recommend it every time. The Premier Equine Trio rugs are ok but are heavy when wet - a mare I look after has one. The Rambo would also sell easily on EBay if you do sell your horse.

The thing is he's never not been rugged. When he was growing up he had the same routine as the sports horses so out in day and in at night and likes his home comforts. In fact if the weather gets real bad he creates to come in and gets very stressy. Less hassle to buy rugs and just bring him in. Even my Sec A pony comes in tbh. Its a bit alien to me to leave ponies unrugged out the whole winter.
