My pony is extremely vet phobic but I suspect she has an abcess, vet came out and managed after 20 mins to get the foot up and have quick feel, prescribed danilon for a week, can’t poultice as she won’t let me do anything with the foot except pick it out but as soon as I try to do anything else she tries to rear and kick out 😳, still lame after a week of box rest so vet back out today , have tried with help to cut away feathers to get better look at hoof but was trampled and dragged about…..I’m hoping vet can get shoe off today for a look as farrier can’t manage for another few days, suggestions please for potential ways to try poulticing, food, likits, calmer all tried with no success ….

I can't really help much other than to sympathise as I had the same problem. Mine was sedated by the vet but it didn't help. The farrier was better as simply physically stronger and hung on to the leg in the end. They usually do burst eventually but it's awful seeing them in such pain.

Sedalin or dormasedan from vet?
Have tried this before when she needed teeth seen to but I can’t even worm her, have to put it in her feed…poor pony has a traumatic past I think, won’t be tied up , just tolerates the farrier, vaccinations usually end up with broken/ bent needles and several attempts to inject and stressed out pony and vet….. 30 years of horse ownership and this one is a challenge but a fantastic companion and affectionate ….just hates to be fussed with ☹️

Maybe your farrier would try and poultice it for you if you got some sedalin into her, you can put that in the feed.

My Louis won't tolerate vets either so I totally get it.

Mines a nightmare for a syringe of wormer or sedative, goes so crazy she ends up with too much adrenaline for the sedative to tale effect. You can try it in feed but again mine knows its there so I use dormasedan as I can rub it on her gums and you only need a tiny bit, do wear medical gloves though or you might sedate yourself lol.

So long as the ground isn't too wet/muddy, I would turn the pony out. The movement of flexing the hoof will help the abscess to burst through the weakest point of the hoof.
Vets do like to prescribe pain relief for abscesses but that can be counter productive as bute/danilon are anti-inflammatory.
