possibly a very stupid question but are there any rules regarding what age you should be to ride a pony at show-showjumping or dressage? just local unaffilated ones? thanks

I don't think there are any general ones. But lots of shows have upper age limits for small jumping classes.

I think if you are looking into competing it would be an idea to ring the organizers of the show to find out!

Dressage you're fine you can enter anything.

Jumping will have different rules dependant on the show - some have adult/junior and some have it on height of horse or some have both i.e ponies 14.2 and under and riders 16 and under so you'll need to grab hold of a schedule - our riding club just goes on jump height I think so anyone can enter anything.

As far as I'm aware there aren't any general age limits although for a lot of classes I've come across, around the age of 17-18 is a cut off point for small jumping classes. This differs between shows, venues and organizers though from what I can gather as I've been to other shows where anyone of any age can take part in a pony class. I guess most show organizers assume that kids will be the main bulk of pony riders so see its only fair to enforce an age cut off point. Why they can't split junior/seniors and do results separately, I don't understand.

Our local show has jump classes for ponies by height and ages.
Though in horses classes you can jump a pony,my daughter at 25 jumps her 13.2 HH against horses.
They do an open working hunter any rider horse combination.
Dressage not really sure.
Most have a web site with all info.
