Good evening all!
In a bit of an awkward one.
We’ve had a delivery of this years hay which is lovely stuff, looks and smells beautiful but it is full of sheep poo! We have to soak hay to reduce sugar (Chubby welsh!) and I think when we soak it, it’s ‘diffusing’ the **** and my pony won’t eat it! Eats it fine when dry. Just seems to be the odd bale that’s worse than others.
what would you do. Would you suck it up and keep feeding it, or send it back? Paid top whack for it too :( Don’t really want my girl eating crap hay, literally!

thanks in advance
Georgina

That’s strange. Our hay field is grazed by sheep over winter, but I’ve never found any traces of sheep poo in the baled hay. I wonder if the sheep were left on the field too long.

It would be a significant contamination problem, especially if you need to soak it.
It’s pretty gross!! I’ve never seen it before. I’ll spare you the details but it’s very dry and crusty! I think the sheep were left too long and that’s the problem. Just can’t decide what to do!!!

I wouldn’t be happy to keep it, but hay is in short supply in many places after the poor yield this year. Will you be able to replace it easily enough if you return it?
You’re right, it’s been a tough year which also makes me not want to be awkward! I should be able to, but maybe sensible to make sure first!! Good thinking

I have returned a large delivery of hay bought from my usual supplier. It was straw coloured, course and had no nose whatsoever and my horses refused it point blank. He grumbled but replaced it with acceptable stuff. Said he had a ready market for the first lot, as bedding perhaps ?
