poo picking as exercise

I was just wondering if anyone knew how many calories you could burn poo picking? Am trying to work it out but no idea where to start as most calorie websites just have horse riding as exercise but not mucking out/poo picking. Didn't know whether 'gardening/raking a lawn' or something would be considered similar in the amount of calories burnt?

Thanks

My husband has developed a new sport. "Nordic Poo picking!!!!!! You have to stride out swinging the poo picker thingy. Then the endurance bit is carting it to the muck heap. He reckons it keeps him very fit!!!!

It definitely helps, even with just one epic poo producer! As does heaving out great big ragwort plants in my new field, phew! However I am going to need about 10 more acres worth to really make a difference haha! Cheaper than the gym :)

People with more than 2 horses must be ripped!

I was interested to know this too, I just had a look round the 'net and the general answer seems to be approx 250 to 280 calories an hour. That seems to be if you poo pick continually though without stopping to talk to the horses, stare at a funny shaped cloud, eat blackberries, try to identify an unusual bird that's just landed in a nearby tree etc etc..

Definitely keeps me fit 3 horses poo pick at least once per day normally twice. When I had an op recently I was told my low heart rate would equate to that of an Olympic athlete and that I must be fitter than I thought! Not bad for a 50 year old!

Not a lot would be my answer! To burn somewhere between 200-300 calories you are going to have to raise your heart rate, break sweat and be slightly out of breath. I run a 3 mile loop at home that takes in three 13% inclines (steep) and half an hour of this would burn somewhere around 300 calories, so I cannot imagine poo picking can do an awful lot calorie burning wise. Sorry.

It must do on my winter field! We have 3 out on a 4 acre hill field and pushing the barrow up and down it certainly raises my pulse and sweat levels!

Fortunatley I only have to do it every other day as share the field, but can definitely feel the 'burn', especially when they first move off the flatter/smaller summer paddocks.

I have to push my barrow for miles to the nearest muck dump, through mud sometimes and then up a steep ramp. I am always sweating (and swearing) by the time I dump it so I am sure it must be doing something.. can always feel it in my arms and legs afterwards too. However, we have a rota so I only do one week in four so maybe I am just unfit!

I've lost 5 dress sizes in a year from purely poo picking, mucking out and looking after 3 horses (first year with them). Can't believe it as haven't changed my diet much! Its a marathon to the muck heap, never ending poo to clear up! Can't believe I have muscles forming where my bingo wings used to be!!

We should put adverts up offering a poo picking exercise program in the great outdoors rather than people paying extortionate gym memberships!!
