Hired/employed someone to help out??

Long and short of it is I am an arthritis sufferer and it has recently spread to my (already rather bad) back and one of the worst jobs I find is poo picking with all the bending and lifting.

So thought I'd find out if has hired or been hired to help with poo picking and what i'd be looking to pay or if payment in riding would be enough??

opinions please!! :)

Have you considered paying a famer to harrow the fields and rest them twice a year? Or have you got limited grazing? I would think if you advertised on preloved or something similar you would find someone? If you have a suitable horse I'm sure someone would do it for a free hack or ride (obviously if they are suitable?) especially at this time of year!

I poo pick for someone as well as doing other jobs in exchange for horse interaction and horse care experience.

when i had my daughters 2 ponies i poo picked every day - limited grazing - and when went away on holiday i paid for a friend of a friend to come in poo pick and weed pull - by heck only acre of ground but it was perfect grazing - nice weeds left and not a poo left over night :)

good for you bay - hey just out there in field - no mobile no music peace birds and horses around you really see so much how they act and interact together - i love it :)

Yep! I poo pick for other people but I'm in Surrey! (Not that Surrey peeps poo pick more than others!) As they say - where there's muck there's brass - but in your situation you may well find someone who would do it in exchange for riding possibly?

Harrowing is not possible as very limited grazing, I currently have 3 horses and keeping on top of the poo picking is a nightmare and generally means I'm aching too much to ride afterwards.

For those that paid people, did you pay by the hour or acre of just by the field??

I adore it. I'm having the best time ever just poo picking! And the fields they are in has the most amazing view, it's so peaceful I love it. OP there must be plenty of people out there who would be willing to help in exchange for some horsey time! :)

I used to charge by the barrow load based on a standard size one. Having said that - I also made sure that I did not abuse this method by making sure that the barrow was well filled before emptying. If you pay by the hour then someone could just flit around the field all day! Probably the best way of doing this is paying a flat fee - you know how much your horses poo over 24 hours. When I poo picked for 3 living out 24/7 I charged £30 per week.

With three horses I'm sure you'll have one you'd be prepared/consider suitable for a share? You should find ppl more than happy to poo pick for riding...

THanks for the Chamreroo - think i may have to try and find someone who wants to ride!! not sure i could finfd £120.00 p/month to pay anyone
and i do need help exercising too!!! so may work both ways!

good to know there are people out their doing it already! :)

Carrying on from EmmaS's thread: I've been looking for someone to poo
pick once everyday in summer. However, I have 5 Shire horses that are
not ridden. We live in a beautiful area (our paddocks look over a valley
with no buildings or roads visible). We have a wonderful little machine with
with a dumper bucket on the front. The only effort required is picking the
muck with normal rake and scoop, dumping into the machine bucket,
driving over to the muck heap and dumping the muck. The machine is very
small and a joy to drive. I, too, suffer from arthritis in my back and hands.
I've recently gone through a bad patch with my back. As a result, my dear
husband has been doing the poo picking. He does a great job, but I worry
about his back, as well. Most of the sites I've visited looking for help seem
to cater for grooms who would like the chance to ride in exchange for work. What chance do you think I would have in finding someone to do
what is basically a horsey-but-not-horsey job?

Where abouts are you?

How many barrow loads was this approx and how long did it take you? I'm thinking of doing the same but not sure what to charge!

Thanks BayLove. I actually love going out there. It's so peaceful, I can
watch the horses, wildlife, sheep. I had a procedure on my back 11 days
ago, and another one is planned for this coming Friday, so my days out
in the paddocks have been curtailed for a while.

I poo pick one pony in exchange for livery, I think the person that did it before was a boy from the local village on £5 a week for doing 2/3 ponys (:

So sorry to hear that. Best of luck for Friday and wishing you a speedy recovery :)

I had a girl look after mine when I went on holiday. She charged £10/hour, for whatever I wanted done in that hour. Which included poo picking.

A friend of mine has a local lad poo picking, he is quick, strong and not on a huge wage. I imagine £5 / hour? Well I reckon if you get focused you can do 4 barrows an hour, so that makes it £1.25 per barrow! Bargain!
