Whilst Clyde was on box rest and confined to either his stable or the concreted are outside it, we were picking up 8-9 poos a day. Now that he is better and is outside 24/7 on restricted grazing, we only get 2-3 poos a day. My mother used to work in a hospital and she says that the less mobile you are, the less poo you do. So, bearing in mind that he never seems to stop walking around because he is so glad to be out, how do you explain this? Could he have been pooing out of sheer boredom!

He was on unlimited hay whilst on box rest, but he has as much grass as he wants now. Could the difference between hay and grass be causing it? Should I offer him hay still?
And Stimpy, you are supposed to be at work, not retired like me(well, semi-retired, have to work part-time to keep the peibald one)

My first thought is that he isn't getting enough fibre

I absolutely agree.

I would very, very concerned if this is all my horse did a day. Amy (on very little grazing) will do a minimum of 8 per day. Plus the dropping overnight in her stable.

If you are happy that your horse is getting enought forage I would consult your vet as a matter of urgency. If the horse is not getting enough forage, then you need to increase it radically!

Sorry, I thought you'd wrote he was now on restricted grazing

- and a guessstimate daily poo allowance should be 10 ish, defo. not 2 , I ditto Amy Mays reply.

Sorry, should have explained, he is restricted in as much as he has to walk through a maze, so he cannot do more than walk. His access to grass is unlimited, I have just given him a load of hay and he fell on it like a plague of locusts! When he first came to me in September I remember that he pooed very little then. He looks very well, someone who had not seen him for months thought he looked gorgeous and had come through the injury very well. I honestly think he is ok in himself. He is also still being fed twice a day- Care mix, mollie chop and nuts plus garlic, oil and apple cider vinegar.

Give him a day or two on the hay first but if he doesn't do more than that then there does sounds like there's a problem!
