Poor Bobby was picked up by my friend today. He had been advertised as needing a home by a warden from a sheltered accommodation complex. A king charles spaniel, 4yrs old, slightly overweight but very friendly. It turns out Bobby was owned by a lady with dementia. Bobby has lived surrounded byhis own urine and faeces. He weighs at least four stone and it took two women to pick him up. He was running alive with fleas and has fur missing on his back from them as no doubt allergic, although he cannot scratch as he is so fat. His rear end is very inflammed. He coughed continuously on the journey from his past home. He has teeth missing. His feet look as though they have been burnt, they are very stained no doubt from standing in his own urine. His claws are very overgrown, one has grown so long that it has curled round and gone into his pad and is coming out the top. Despite all this, little Bobby wagged his tail when my friend told him what a lovely little boy he was and continued to wag everytime he was spoken to.
Bobbys owner as I have said has dementia yet her family visit twice a week and the owner has meals on wheels. The warden has obviously known about the state Bobby was in, infact it was her who has made him be rehomed because of the mess in the house.
Why has no-one stepped in to help poor Bobby before all this escalated??
Bobby is tonight in a rescue centre, the vet was coming this afternoon and I will find out tomorrow whether Bobby has been pts or not. If Bobby can be saved my friend has offered him a home with her two dogs, she will take time off work to get him on the road to recovery, she has also offered to fund any veterinary expenses and I will also chip in.
Dont know why I am posting, maybe because it is such a shock and also because there is nothing to stop this woman going out and getting another dog. If animals are kept in sheltered housing then maybe the wardens should be held responsible if these animals aren't cared for properly. I dunno, it is just so very very sad.

What a shame as you said not the owners fault, from the above wrong with him i would be suprised if he is PTS as everything should be fixable with care esp if your friend is willing to pay and re home him good luck xx

Isnt it just unbelievable. presumeably other profs have visited doctors, district nurse etc and must have noticed the smell if nothing else and done nothing. They probabley have dogs of their own and would class themselves as animal lovers:rolleyes:.

Well done to your friend and please give us an update.

Poor Bobby - I hope the vets prognosis is good and things can turn around for him. I am also concerned that the elderly owner suffering from dementia is still living in the same conditions that Bobby was. Is this lady known to social services as it appears those who are involved with this poor lady are either short-sighted or short on brain cells?:(

Well Bobby is now at the vets, the vet took him there yesterday. They are doing tests on him and he is on a drip. They have de-flead him and managed to cut his nails even the ingrowing one which fell out with very little intervention, guess it had just gone rotten. He is on antibiotics for the infection in his eye (forgot to tell you about that one), his feet and his rear end. The vet has said they will know more about his prognosis tomorrow so everyone is keeping their fingers crossed. I will try to get some pictures in afew days, my friend was going to take some yesterday but she was so upset and didnt think it was right. The kennels possibly have some and are contacting the rspca with regards to the neglect which his owners family have been witness to for months and months without doing anything. I don't hold out much hope of anyone being held responsible for Bobbys condition tbh. At least he is out of there and must feel so much more comfortable.
Not sure what is happening with the old owner, I will ask and find out what I can. The warden must have been concerned about the mess, etc. so hopefully have contacted the authorities regarding how this woman is not managing.
