I just had a phone call from the owner of Chad who I had on loan. She had the dentist out to him and the poor lads mouth was in a right state.

The dentist said it appeared that he had had a heavy blow to the head at some point resulting in jaw and tooth damage. Dentist thinks this was 3-4 years ago and may explain why Chad is a little headshy. His bad teeth and bad jaw alignment (not visable from outside) have resulted in sores on the inside of his mouth which must be very painful.

Dentist also said he must have been in pain when ridden by his previous owners as they put in a really harsh bit and a grackle, which dentist said would have been very painful for poor old Chad. The dentist is coming back in a few days to start work on him.

His owner was quite upset when she rang me because she was so cross that the previous owner (we got Chad in March) hadn’t had his teeth looked at in the 4 years they had had him. Poor Chaddy, he must have been so sore but never complained about being tacked up (in an eggbut snaffle, no noseband, so that helped a bit) and rode absolutely fine. Its good that I am quite light handed too and ride loose – I dread to think how much pain I could have inflicted on him had I been a bit heavy handed.

It will be interesting to see how he is when his mouth has been sorted and he is pain free for the first time in a long while. Bet he will be like a different pony!

Oh bless him
