Today we had an invader in the form of a young ram which we enticed onto the yard as he was wandering in the road, and we feared he would get run over. The ram ran through the paddocks, scared the life out of my happily grazing warmblood, who then decided the ram was a curious creature and he decided to investigate a bit closer. In the background was my working sheepdog sky, hiding away in the stable. In the meanwhile WB began to round up the ram, poor creature, chasing it here and there and throwing in the odd side kick for good measure.I decided to call Sky,who was still lurking in the stable, thinking that his herding instincts could be applied to good use to get the ram safely away from the horses, who by this time were all very interested and wanting to chase the ram.The ram did not know which way to go,as whichever field he headed for contained big beasties who wanted to play with it.Sky,however, took one look at the ram and retreated, firstly behind me,then back to the stable. No amount of encouragement could get the useless sheepdog to do what his breeding intended. Now i know sky has never been trained to do sheep herding but i kind of thought there might be some latent talent and instinct waiting to emerge.Sadly he prefers to play with the ball. The sheep, incidently remains on the yard waiting to be claimed, and the horses have reacted with a mixture of fear and a need to continue chasing the sheep. No one could ride in the school as the horses were still being silly around the poor ram, although the ram has soon found out where the feedroom is.

Ha, mine is also FAR more interested in playing with his ball than herding fluffy white things... Although I wouldn't put it past him not to chase them (as opposed to herding!) given half the chance...

Think i may just have a "sheephorse" whose efforts so far rival "babe".This morning though WB and Ram seems to have become inseparable. They have spend the whole morning nuzzling each other.I took my other sheepdog,Sam up to the stables, and he proved equally useless. Both collies come from working stock and are registered with the ISDS.I have to conclude that they are not fit for purpose.

Well it looks pretty much like the ram is staying put with us,as we found out who the owner is,and i'm sad to say he could not give a dam, even offered to shoot it.The horses are still very intrigued by the ram,now called Rambo, and he sleeps by the stables at night, only going back out when the hosres are turned out. Both sheepdogs are still ignoring the ram,so guess they will have to herd the ball instead.
