last time fox had his teeth done, vet said to leave him 9 months as he thought his teeth looked fine, eventhough previously fox had been getting his teeth done every 6 months.

so vet was out today (big boss vet, the guy that had been previously has now left the practice) and was shocked at foxs teeth. ulcers down both cheeks, very sharp points at the back and front, and over growths. my poor boy :( vet was up for an hour with electric dental tools then rasping, even under sedation i could tell my boy was hurting. he said he was shocked fox hadnt been throwing his head around when being ridden, so like my boy, hes a very introvert sufferer.. vet said he was raging as the if his teeth had been done properly at the previous visit foxs mouth wouldnt be in this state, and its probably why hes lost so much weight.

now hes just standing in his stable feeling very sorry for himself, staring at his haynet too sore to eat it :( im so angry that the last idiot vet didnt even do a proper job! caused so much uneccessary stress for my boy.

I wouldn't be paying I'm afraid, not after the senior vet was so quick to offer up criticism of the work done previously.

i wish i had the cahoonas to say the same. but he did an amazing job today and was so patient when fox started swinging has face full of gag and bits of teeth around. he says if i want he'll do foxs teeth from now on every six months, so i know today i got my moneys worth

But you didn't get your money's worth. You had someone cleaning up someone else mess.

A simple phone call to discuss your bill reduction is all you need to make.

I'm with AmyMay - I'd be ringing the practice and asking for the cost of the last visit to be removed from this visit's bill.....

I'd give them a call.
I'd want this free and then have same bloke out every 6months (if he's quick to point out a problem from his own vets rather than hide it he's probably worth keeping hold of!)

Give them a call - vets aren't cheap!

I'm having a new dentist out tomorrow after recommendations on here (no pressure guys ;) ), we've had the same (unqualified but horseman type) dentist for years so I'm interested to see the difference in comments etc - horse certainly doesn't have problems with keeping weight on lol

You should defo at least get a discount, do an email if its easier, better than saying nothing at all, I know how you feel about confrontation! Phone would probably be better but I would cave too :-/

I'd be getting an EDT in to check your horse has any teeth left after an hour's treatment with power floats

Did the vet explain what circumstances in the horse's dentition or grinding pattern has led to such problems?

I know EXACTLY the vet your talkin about. He told me my mare would return to full ridden work after jellifying 2/3rds of her sdft. Then when he left the boss vet came out to do a scan and told me she would be lucky if the was sound enough for flatwork and that Id done a great job keeping her sound  He would have PTS so i put a stressy horse through nearly 6 months of box rest un-necessarily needless to say I wasnt happy

Needless to say I made a complaint and it was dealt with well. Mare is now enjoying dressage with a new owner and they are doing brilliantly :) That particular vet has been around with nearly every vet practice from here to aberdeen and doesnt seemto last more than 6 months

it wasnt the power ones the whole time, just to get the worst off.

yeah his teeth dont grind together at both the back and front, just meet in the middle if you get me? vet said the sharp points should have been taken right down instead of just evened off, and because last vet didnt do this the teeth have grown to almost doubled the size.

How's he eating now and (my EDT son is asking) did he give the horse frequent 'breaks' and let him close his mouth? If not, it won't be just tooth pain he's suffering with, but also the muscles from having the mouth wedged open. Your horse should still be able to eat immediately and if long fibre is not easy, feed fibre made into slop or get him out to grass.

I sincerely hope they do now!

the only break he got was when the vet had to change the gag to one that made it easier to see the outside of his back teeth(i couldnt tell the difference tbh), like against the cheeks. he's eating his feeds fine, still a bit mouthy with the haylege but he loves his grub so eats none the less.

turnout isnt possible at my yard right now as the fields are waterlogged.

I had my horse teeth done by a very experienced horse dentist yesterday and i was talking to him about vets doing horses teeth. Most of them aren't specialized in ED and buy expensive kits and use them. Is this just the same for us would you let your doctor do your teeth??

To be fair, some vets are upping their game in the face of specialist competition from EDT's, but there are many who have only done a few basic mouths during vet training and have the luxury of being able to sedate and work at their leisure.

Horse dentistry is a science of its own and not just about taking points off teeth.

my vets will do a rasp on teeth with no issues any more than that they have an ED who goes in to the practice every few weeks and you can book in with him, the vets are on site to sedate or in complicated cases to assist-i also find it reassuring cos one of the vets is in the stable whilst horse is being done so th ED is being observed all the time-this enables the vets to gain knowledge

i have every confidence that the vet knows what he was doing with foxs teeth, he talked me through everything he was doing and why he was doing it. he tells it like it is. i did work experience at the practice last year and spent time with him on many visits, the man knows his stuff and has had awards due to it. he could tell right away the last guy had made an arse of it, and let me feel in foxs mouth before and after so i could get an idea as to what he'd done. he warned me fox would be sore and offered painkillers, but as fox wont touch a feed with any medication in it i said he'll have to do without

not sure why OP is being jumped on, she's done the best and got her horses mouth sorted out. My vet is also qualified in dentistry so I'll be using her in a few months for my horses teeth.
