My farrier text me yesterday to say my horse had really poor hoof quality and should be on a supplement (which he conveniently is supplying). Well I personally think for the weather we have had Lottie's feet are not that bad. She has the odd crumble around nail holes but that is it. Also last year she was a nutter so probably was not being fed sufficiently. This year she is a dobbin so has a balanced diet, I said I will keep an eyebut felt her feet would improve.

What do your farriers advice you and what is good for horn quality if they continue to deteriorate?

Honestly one of the best remedies is good old cornecresin(sp)!
Plus added advanteage that by rubbing it in makes your nails grow too. Plus at much much cheaper pice that lasts longer than suplements!

its magnesium oxide. Very good for promoting good horn growth etc. I think its about £6 for a 20kg bag. Magnesium is the base for most hoof supplements as well as calmers so if your horse a bit of a "nutter" at times it will help here too.

you should be able to pick it up from your feed merchant. It comes under the cow feed section at our feed merchants and you buy it by the sack load - 20kg but lasts ages.

I reluctantly started my boy on Farriers Formula six months ago and I am totally shocked to say that it has made no end of difference. My boy had shocking feet, very brittle and has to be shod every 4wks in the summer. I've just had him shod and the quality of the horn is the best its ever been. I also paint stockholm tar on his hooves and that seems to work quite well (its very messy tho!!!).
