Had the vet on Thurs and she took swabs and put him on IM antibiotics (for the second time) and gave me an antiseptic wash to wash his face with. He has it washed AM and PM and after dark i cover it in manuka honey and wash it off before the flies come out in the mornings.
For those who didnt know this started as a smallish infected fly bite

yes, I would say it is at least as third as big again from last wed.

Vet should have swab results back by tommorrow ish i should think, most possible things should grow in a couple of days.

I would be concerned that it is something not responding to these antibiotics but know you said that he couldn't have that many versions. hopefully lab is also doing a sensitivity test (v simple) in order to check this.

poor badger. I think you need to speak to vet again in morning victoria as it has got worse.

Hum.. its got worse but it looks to haves started to granulate.

If you are worried then get you vet hunnie. its in a nasty place and both of you are being very brave.

Lou x

it granulates and then he scratches it off with his hind foot. vet also gave him a steroid jab to try take the itching away. We figure if it is not itchy anymore then he will leave it to heal......Getting a bit worried now

I agree with lou it does look to be starting to granulate possibly but I think I would have been happier if it hadn't gotten so much bigger when he has had 4 days of IM antibiotics (I assume you are giving these ie it wasn't just a single shot on thurs?). If the antibiotics were working properly I think it would look better than it does now.
(though am only guessing)

It looks to have moved up, down and poss across though difficult to tell with angle.

Oh dear

I hope he improves asap.

I had him in mind today as one of my girls has got a slightly swollen bite under her jaw....

hobbles?

He really needs to leave it alone, do you think he would scratch on something else. though you could make him a small eleccy fence pen.

If he is scratching it with a foot he is introducing even more cr@p into it and its going to be difficult to tell if any improvement if he is still aggravating it.

just wondering how long you have been using the honey we use it a lot with very good results (humans not horses) but the wounds very often look worse before they get better as the honey removes all the non viable tissue he wont be helping matters by scratching it though only way to stop that is to hobble him behind I suppose not sure how practcal that would be though

I was using the inrasite gel before the vet came but she thought i should be trying to let it air. TBH she is pretty confused about it all as well!
I sat with him for a couple of hours to monitor his behaviour and he rubbed it on everything! with his foot, on doughnut, fence, walls and even on the bloody floor! (thought of hobbling him but if he is rubbing it on the floor then i worry he might try do that when hobbled?
How would i put a pad on it? vet didnt want it covered up but have been thinking that might be my only option. thought of lycra hood (know lycra not ideal) with melonin stuck to the honey under the hood? vet thought he would sweat and make it more itchy.

He has had honey on it since friday

Yes I give him the IM antibiotics

think that would be my next step leave lashings of honey on with non stick over ie melolin under a lycra hood failing that loads of aloe vera jelly applied liberally and often Good Luck

ok the floor is a problem hard to get rid of that unless we string him up with a number of helium balloons?

does he get down to do it on the floor, ie lay down. my initial reaction would be to keep it open to air too. infection loves it warm and damp. We could be really mean and hobble and cross tie him poor mite but still it might be better in the long run even if he could leave it alone for a couple of days, it might make a big difference but I think it is going to be itchy for a while, scabs always are aren't they.

If he was mine I would phone vet tommorrow, I think they need to know it has gotten worse have a chat, find out when lab results are back as in some ways you are treating blind otherwise. I think it is going to be hooching (technical term) with something and have a couple of suscpisions but could be way out. Ask if they are doing a test to see what antibiotics would work. I know that you are restricted as he is a babe but it is still pointless using any if it is resistant to them. Sensitivity tests are very simple it just means having the bug (technical term!) on a plate and adding small discs of antibiotic to see which inhibit growth. and would be standard for infections not responding.

ester you are a fountain of knowledge!!!

I will get up early and go see susannah (vet) in the morn before she goes on call outs. She mentioned steroid cream but didnt want to overload him on steroids as he had a steroid injection on fri.

I know its totally different but a pony at my last yard kept rubbing its eye to the point they were talking about removing it. The vet made a donut out of I think a sausage boot and vetwrap and pretty much bandaged it to the ponies face and headcollar leaving the eye uncovered so it could heal. This way when she rubbed she couldnt actually rub her eye. Just a thought.

blow up rubber rings round top and bottom of his head then! i know its small but don't think sausage boot will be big enough.

Ps am not fountain of knowledge just spend too long in lab so I can do that side of things and am trying to prepare for a meeting with my phd supervisor tommorrow!

One of mine had a very similar wound to this. His was on the front of the pastern. It started with a small circular area and just grew and grew - in diameter and depth. It didn't respond to "normal" anti-biotics at first. My vet did the "which bug is it?"test. The results showed loads of different bugs that were attacking his immune system. Many of these were not treatable by normal anti-b's. I was offered the choice of intravenous anti-b's or one that you actually syringed into their mouth. I would definitely get that test done, and carry on with the manuka honey.

As for the scratching, no advice I'm afraid. Grrr horses, they don't help themselves do they?

Good luck, hope you start winning soon.

They dont do elisabethan collars for horsses like they do for dogs I suppose. Only thing I can think of is something like one of those draught excluder sausages tied together somehow. Sorry havenet seen original post so dont know what tyou have tried / Hope you can sort something out
