Poor Martin Clunes

I watched the series (now have english tv - bliss!) and found it really fascinating. I really did enjoy the series, there were some beautiful scenes. Don't see what everyone is arguing about?!

ETA - Martin clunes seems so genuine and sweet - a real character, I have to say I really like the guy.

I really hope he is reading this, to see at long last the majority of us enjoyed seeing, a person, who just loves horses, and wants to learn more no matter what the culture.

I thought it was intersting to see how the rest of the world 'use' their equine friends, and no matter what we think of various practices, how we all share a common love of this beautiful animal.

cool, so if you wanted to ride one of those horses normally would they be ok?

Also just something I just thought of, in the racing bit at Fontwell the announcer in the background said Pete the Feat my friend works for his trainer and rides the horse out everyday she's always talking about him!!

no they woulde'nt they are bred to buck there are stock contractors that breed the rodeo stock, the bucking horses, bulls they ( the animals have fan clubs) and are worth fortunes if they are good at there job and are very well looked after,
the pick up riders have to rescue the riders and get the strap off as quickly as possible otherwise the horses get used to it and are ruined!!! yes what a lovely program..a joy to watch I coulden't
see the BBC making something like that without a load of leftwing twaddle about privalege
and oppresion of the working classes and showing those toffs foxhunting....

Can I offer a bit of common sense here.

My gelding reveals his 'fifth leg' when he finds something pleasurable. IF I was quick enough to wrap a strap around him and his manhood, he would indeed buck, but do you think he would let me, or anyone else near him with a strap ever again.

Unless the Yanks have managed to selectively breed whole herds of stallions and gelding that are into sadomasochism, then I think we can pretty much put the tin lid on that myth.

If you want a view from the inside of the rodeo world, read Monty Roberts book 'The man who listens to horses'.

oh please monty roberts!!!! dont start with that story tellers bull, and yes they do breed selectivly for that bucking trait just like some people breed, to be better for jumping over colored poles , or for speed or movement and the strap doesnt go over "that" area anyway alot of the good bucking horses are mares, its a flank strap goes round the belly and the ticklish bit in front of the back legs...

I did find a photo, it is on the other MC thread, it doesn't want to link to here. Sorry, I am a stupid technophobe.

I really believed the strap went round their genitals, and genuinely want to know more about these bronco horses.

and I don't mean to be in any way patronising about Martin Clunes, I really like him!

:) It is very hard to judge for yourself when the opportunity to see it first hand in Britain is impossible (I don't think they have broncs in the rodeos there, do they?) If you ever do get the chance, do go, even if you absolutely hate it you can walk away, that's fine, but at least you'll have seen it with your own eyes and can draw your own conclusions.

There is such a wealth of articles on the subject, both for and against, that it makes for very confusing reading and one gets totally bogged down with all the arguments.

That is quite an informative article that Perfects11s linked to.

Hey! Don't bite me, I'm on your side.

I'd love to go to a rodeo, and if I ever go to the states I will certainly go. I've never seen a rodeo in this country, might have to google it later and see if there are some!

They use (or used to)a flank strap on Dairy cows to stop them cow kicking I wonder what the differance in action is?
I loved the programme, all the more so that it was presented by a REAL novice not a presenter asking silly questions,it made a refreshing chance,I just wish they had had the time to go into it with a bit more depth.
(And Yes many a true word is spoken in jest!);)
