At least the GR was found and finally put out of her suffering.

I used to work in Boarding Kennels and people would often dump animals nearby in the hope we would take them in. The worst I ever saw was a tiny dead Staffy bitch that had obviously been thown from a moving car, she was a complete bag of bones, every bone was visable through her coat.

I saw a TV show about a Danish Rescue center a few years ago and in one episode it came in an old wire-haired Dachshund. As I recall, the staff found out it had cancer and had been dumped at the rescue because the owners had felt unable to make the decision to euthanize.

Now as an example, I know that my mother is glad that we have my/our dogs and cats together, because she would really find it difficult if the final decision was up to her alone and she has said more than once that she is relieved that I'm able to take that responsibility. But if I wasn't here, I know that she would either do as she thought I would have done/wanted or she would at least have the sense to simply take the dog or cat to a vet we trusted and ask them to help her make the decision.

She would certainly never have abandoned one of them at a rescue and made it live its last days mainly alone in a unfamiliar environment, even though she can worry herself almost to the point of a heart attack, when she worries about that the end for one of our pets might be coming near.
