Today the boy went in for his dental, and ended up having seven teeth removed (premolars and incisors) :(

I'm due to pick him up in an hour, and he will be on antibiotics and painkillers for a couple of weeks. Poor hamster head.

O poor boy!!:(:(:(

To many doughnuts and cakes in his old home!!

Tiny gentle hugs for the little man.:)

Absolutely.

The weather is forecast for mid-70s at the weekend, and I had plans to take them to the 3000-acre Pelham Bay Park in the Bronx. Alas, maybe another weekend if he's too swollen and sore.

Jasper had 11 teeth removed in one go a few years ago.

He recovered pretty darned quickly. Amazed me that he still wanted to eat just after surgery.

Advice we had was to make sure to feed dry food and wet/mashy food would be more likely to get stuck in the "pockets" in the gums and lead to infection.

He also had antibiotics and the improvement in his "dog breath" was instant!

It won't let me edit....well it will, but then I can't save the edit for some reason.

Anyway, I wanted to correct the typo. We were told to feed dry AS (not and) wet food could get stuck in the pockets etc.

Only other long term advice we were given was to feed a kibble designed to aid teeth. One with mixed sized pieces which would help scrape against the teeth/gums during meal times.

We were also advised to brush his teeth as often as possible and give chews/bones to encourage natural teeth cleaning. This was Jasper's problem, he would never chew anything so wouldn't help himself.

Interesting. My vet told me to feed Prince excusively wet food for two weeks, although I can see what you're saying about bits getting stuck.

Other than that, she wants us to brush his teeth daily once he's recovered. She also recommended chews, but not bones for some reason.

Pleased to report he ate a quarter cup of food tonight, and is now snoring in bed.

Stella wanted so badly to play. She spent ages sniffing him, too, as if checking he was the same puglet.

Poor Prince, hope he feels better soon. We had a Lancashire Heeler who had awful teeth, she had 4 or 5 taken out (only went in for a clean:() including a couple at the front. She coped absolutely fine and was soon back to normal. In those days I fed raw green tripe and the only difference was that she had to have smaller pieces after she had the teeth removed.
