Poor "puppy parenting" skills

Looks like we're having a little rant tonight so I'll join in - tbh I've struggled to keep it to myself ;)

The other day, when there was snow on the ground, I was returning home with my dog when I noticed a puppy (Lakeland, I think) on the other side of the road. Owner was on her phone and puppy was bringing up the rear on an extending lead.

Postie with a barrow was coming towards them, he left his barrow on the pavement when he went up a drive. Poor pup was terrified of the barrow and slammed the brakes on. Owner, completely oblivious to the pup's anxiety, carried on walking, on her phone, dragging the pup who was by now virtually in a sitting position trying to resist forward motion. She glanced at him briefly as she dragged him still on his haunches, past the barrow and carried on.

I felt very sad for the little chap
 
I am appalled at the amount of baby puppies I have seen in the last few weeks 'out for a walk'. These same owners will be wondering why their dogs are crippled at a young age.

Mine is over six months now and we're still working on Looking At All The Things and walking beside me calmy as a training exercise (which is difficult as she is clearly part kangaroo ?) rather than going for a route march....
 
I once watched a spaniel pup get run over because it's stupid owner stood at a massive 8-road junction fiddling with her phone, taking absolutely no notice of the poor pup on its long lead, it stepped off the pavement just as a big double cab set off when the lights changed. Idiotic owner stood there looking gormless as the pup screamed. The driver got out of the vehicle and tended to the pup while dimbo just stood there. The lights changed for us and we had to set off but I can only hope the driver took the pup to the vet and gave the owner the biggest rollicking of her life. I was dying to get out of the car and tell her what I thought.

Oh, PaS that's awful.

I watched a Supervet where a dog had been run over and badly injured, it chased vehicles and was on an extending lead. Owner was told not to blame herself, blah, blah. Thankfully the dog survived. When they filmed the dog with its family after recovery it was on an extending lead :rolleyes:

It's probably a good job we had to drive off, or I would very likely have got myself arrested. I really wanted to slap her. I had watched it all unfold and could see exactly what was going to happen but couldn't do a thing to stop it.

And I do hope no-one told dimbo that it wasn't her fault, she certainly should have blamed herself - and learned from the experience!
 
I saw the CTV of a puppy, believed to be a husky or retriever (v poor quality film). Man and woman, the man pulled the puppy off the ground by the lead. It was trying to sniff something on the ground. The man ended up pulling it so hard it was thrown sideways into a fence. Heartbreaking. I won’t share the film, it was horrible to see. RSPCA trying to identify them. So upsetting.

me too. I think she is full kangaroo ? Highly reactive to all things new. Just trying to get her to focus on me when we come across ‘monsters’.
 
My own dog spooked at a giant snowman so I just stood quietly with her until she gathered herself and then I said brightly "well that's a funny thing, ****, shall we go and have a look?" With reassurance from me, I let her approach at her own pace, which she did very cautiously, she gave it a good sniff and decided it was safe. She didn't give it a second glance the following day.

That's the approach I would have taken with the Lakeland puppy. He is going to come across postmen with barrows again and needs to know there is nothing to be afraid of.
 
Some people just don’t get dog ownership at all .
I hate long leads I don’t own anything longer than a horses lead rope .

A few weeks ago a vizsla puppy came around a corner on the full extension of a flexi lead/Julius K9 harness combo and launched at us. Eventually got reeled in, whereupon the owner whacked it on the head with the plastic body of the flexi lead.

Same dog ran across a road to get to us this week so is as much at risk of ending up squashed as it is with a complex around other dogs. ?
 
My brother teaches his dogs to heel by lifting them off theiir feet by the lead and pinging them back behind him. Funnily enough he's never had one yet that ever learned.
Puppy parenting is an awful descriptor though, sorry SD ;):p.
 
I have had to unfollow the two mainly pet dog pages I follow on FB because they are full of people struggling with the most basic of puppy training and behaviour. We all had to start somewhere I know, but so many people clearly haven't even done the most basic of reading or research on the type of puppy they have, how to feed/toilet train/look after a dog etc etc. Drives me nuts.

I suspect I know the ones you mean. I can’t decide whether to be depressed or angry at how many numpties there seem to be out there .

Me too , I once talked someone out of getting a dog they wanted an Irish wheaten Terrier ....because it would tone with her settee .
