Hopefully just a quickie!

Frankie was clipped at the start of January and is still yet to grow a nice coat. He looks less shiny/healthy than his field mates and is a bit scurfy especially round his forelock area.

He is fed lucie stalks (alf-alfa) and naf slimline and magnesium. His feet and mane are in great condition.

He is being treated by the physio for neck and back pain.

How old is he?

As horses get older, they do seem to hang on to their winter coats for longer. Can be a sign of cushings, which all horses get eventually, or could be the cold nights are holding things up a bit. But coat growth is also dependent on daylight hours, so it should be shedding gradually.

Do many hairs come out if you use one of the metal mud scrapers?

I wouldn't panic. If he is an "oldie" its fairly normal, particularly like Llewelyn says, if they have cushings. My oap cushing boy looks pants at the moment. His coat is coming through in fits and starts, and some is nice summer coat, other bits are not!
But he will get there in the end....and so will yours!
A good bath and curry while the weather is nice will help no end.

He's not yet 7.

His winter coat was all clipped off. It just seems that his summer coat is taking ages to come through.
