I have a poorly chook.

Depressed, away from the others. Tail feathers clamped down, head carried low and feathers all plumped up.

Most worrying symptom is bleeding from the mouth. Watery blood dripped out of mouth when I was leaning over to pick something up off floor, whilst holding it. Breathing sounds a little wheezy.

It's my Polish/silkie cross hatched this year.

I have separated her from the other hens in the hatching shed and have put the heat lamp on for her. 2cc of metacam have been added to water but she looks too ill to mess with her to try and syringe some down her neck. Worried the shock of treating her would kill her.

She could have infectious bronchitis, are the others ok, signs are sneezing, poor shells on the eggs (wrinkly or thin). If others are showing signs you can treat it with antibiotics, if its just her, personally i would send her to the hen house in the sky. If she does pick up, watch her when you put her back in with the others as they may well pick on her.

She's not laying yet as she's pretty much at POL, I'd imagine. Can't quite remember when I hatched them.

No sneezing that I've noticed. Just quiet and with the blood watery blood dripping from her mouth.

We do have loads of antibiotics here on the farm and I think we had to treat a duck with Tylan in the water as it treated all of them at the same time.

Could always treat the remaining hen's water as a precaution, as well as the ducks. They don't share water, but they do share the same "chook run" area in the garden.

I'll see what she's like in the morning before I draw straws for dispatching with the hubby.

My mum usually treats with Baytrill or Tylan if she has one that is off colour. Not sure what else to suggest - have you tried opening her beak to see exactly where it (blood) is coming from? Probably unlikey as never known one to bleed, but does she have a blocked croup (sp)?

They were wormed about 8 weeks ago, daily for seven days.

Will have a good look at her in the morning with the OH. Can't do much with her in the dark.

could be many things, infecious bronchitis, but i would expect others to be showing symptoms, crop bound- have you felt her crop?? could even have pecked up a wire, you really need to get her in and have a good look inside her mouth....good luck!

There's no wire for her to eat in their run. She didn't feel crop bound or egg bound. Felt a bit skinny if anything, to be honest. They have plenty of grit too ad-lib in their hen house.

It's very strange. None of the others seem offside at all. I'd bring her in the house to have a good look at her in decent light, when hubby's finished milking. but the dog would probably want to eat her.

sounds sick but pity you wern't nearer, my boss would liked to have p'med her, he has been in the poultry industry for 50 years and is currently writing a book on ailments of poultry - complete with photos - i have become quite an adept mortician of poultry these days! although i did decline the one a kindly customer brought over that had died 3 days previously during the summer
