I have a poorly horse. Canu you help? about 4 weeks ago he had some slight raised respirations. He had a cold, so I didnt worry as his temperature was fine, he was eating and drinking well. However, they didnt clear and appeared worse so I got the vet. He noted fliud in Wiz's tummy and took some bloods. the enzymes in his liver was up and issues with his red and white blood cells. Antibiotics and steriod injection havent worked as a newtest shw some improvement in hisliver function, but not enough. He is going to Liverpool Equine Hospital next week for an ultrasound and liver biopsy. He is only 7, temp still normal and eating and drinking well.

The tears continue as I am terrified, but all seem confused by Wiz's symptoms as rthey dont point in any real direction. Have any of you had similar.

Can't offer any advice I'm afraid but just wanted to wish you and Wiz all the best for Liverpool. Fingers crossed they can get to the bottom of it and get him right x

Hi Wizgirl

Sorry I can't offer any advice based on what you have said but the fact he is eating and drinking well is great. Liverpool is an excellent hospital and they will do whatever needs doing to find out what is wrong and hopefully put it right for him. Try not to panic, I know it is hard, ask lots of questions - they won't mind.

Please let us know how he gets on.

(Welcome to the forum by the way!)

Liverpool is great, and I'm sure they'll get to the bottom of it. My horse had a chest problem and we took him to see a guy called sean McKane there who was amazing, and got him sorted. When are you taking him? Hope it goes well.

Hi All,

Well took Wiz to Liverpool. All were fab and throughly checked out Wiz, much to his disgust and my embarrassment when he wouldn't enter the stocks for love, money or feed!!!

Few issues, query re diabetes, though I won't have the results til mon. He has however, had a chest infection which could explain his respirations.

It turns out the odema is fat!!!! he is so, the vet's say 100kg over weight He was 605kg and as a 15h 1 cob, I was advised he should be just over 500kg. I have therefore, to put him on a strict diet and encourage everyone not to feed him.

Also gone are the thick rugs and he now is consigned to the light weight version in order to burn calories. If it is diabetes he just will keeo eatting, so I have to buy a new muzzel. He ate through his last one in 1 week.

No probs noted with Wiz's liver which was a real concern. Again more results mon, which will give final conclusion.

I will keep you all posted and thanks for all your good wishes Wiz and I are grateful.

Pleased to hear you are getting to the bottom of this - equine hospitals are fabulous, I just find ambulatory vets are very limited in what they can do, and hospitals just manage to get to the bottom of things so much faster.

I am surprised he caused so much trouble to get in the stocks - if we ever had a problem we just whispered in the horses ear - you know that horse in Stall 9 who died - we killed him because he would not cooperate, and they would generally respond positively and go right on in.
