Hi folks.
My poor girl is poorly. It all started on Saturday night. She came in from the field with swollen eyes and very lethargic. Her temperature was 38.8 and she kept dosing off. The vet saw her at 5pm and gave her an antibiotic injection and an anti-inflammatory injection and said "it's an allergic reaction and her temp will come down almost immediately". So, 9pm came and her temp had not changed at all, she had started to sweat and kept dosing off still. Vet came out again with a new vet at half 9, and took bloods, gave her eye drops and told me to keep an eye on her.

Yesterday she was better, temp of 37.7, eye less closed, more herself and more alert.

Today, I go up and her eye is closed again, she is falling asleep on me, her temp was 38c, her 3rd eyelid started to come over. The bloods came back normal apart from her having a very low iron level. Vet is coming out tomorrow morning as she has never seen anything like this.

I don't know what to do :( my poor girl is just not herself and I don't know how to make her feel better.

Here is a pic of her worst eye:

Swollen eyes are very painful, she could be lethargic/sleepy because her eyes hurt. One of my horses is allergic to a type of grass in hay i think, he will sometimes have one or both eyes sore, swollen and closed. They are sometimes sore for one day or maybe two or three days, i have eye drops for him from the vet now to use but he only gets it occasionally, and he tends to get it a few times and then won't get it again for maybe a year. I usually give him a sachet of bute and that helps a bit. I've never taken his temp to know if its up but if it happens again i will do out of interest. Normal temp for a horse is 37.0 - 38.5 . Hope your girl is feeling better soon.

Hi, hmm I didn't think it was an allergy as I thought she would present a rash or swollen lips? She's on the same hay she was on at her old yard so I wouldn't think it's that?

Have you just moved yards? Maybe its a plant or bush in the field. Is that a spot just below her eye?

Have you asked the vet about uveitis or RU??

Has he put dye in the eye to see if there is a scratch?

This in the big picture would worry me, tell the vets you want to get to the bottom of it and they have to investigate further. I would not drag this out, the sooner you find out the cause the sooner the cure.

She moved yards at the start of October. And she only moved 2miles away. That's a treated sarcoid under her eye :)

I shall ask about uveitis and RU today. Good thinking.
No, they have not put any dye in the eye. Could a scratch be the cause of this?

I'm gonna do all I can to find out what's wrong with her :)

yes it could if its caused an ulcer

Hope your horse is feeling better. Our Vets supply a tonic supplement called Event, a pick me up sort of thing loaded with vitamins, etc. Ask your Vet if it would be any good for yours.
