Jack the whippet likes jumping over gates and fences. This has resulted in a very nasty looking wound- he has scraped his skin off and it has gone pretty deep. Bleeding a lot... put some veterinary wound powder on it but either he or his sister, Sky, licks it straight back off again. Should I just leave it to heal on its own? Will it heal if he keeps liking it?
Don't know if you can see in the pic but it is about 1cm deep. He doesn't seem too bothered about it and isn't lame on it.

Ouchy!

yup to the vet you must go!
I will think ul get antibiotics as its near his knee joint and the last thing you want is for his joint to get infected!
possibly stitches and also something to stop him licking it as its not the best thing in the world for him to do!

poor lad!

Tis difficult as we wont be able to stop it being licked due to Sky, our other whippet. They are inseparable. It isn't near any joints really, plus it looks very clean.
This shows it a bit better in daylight:

And this shows how big/where it is in comparison to his body:

Don't know what to do as am going to Wales in half an hour eventing, just came on to check what you lot thought, wont be back till 8pm (my sister is home but she cant drive).

You might end up having to separate them when you aren't there to supervise, as licking could easily lead to it becoming infected

Could you use a babygate so they can still see each other and snggle up through it but not lick? The travel baby gates are mesh fabric, maybe one of those could work - or are they crated at all?

Vet job definitely, although you have probably left it too late to be stitched now

Ah the joys of sighthounds with lovely tearable skin

- but it is too deep to be just left, it will heal eventually if you do that but is very likely to become infected

I doubt it would be able to be stitched after wound powder was applied.

It is my vets opinion that all wound powder should be binned as people use to to dress wounds. Wounds heal beter when moist. It dries and kills the surface cells preventing the surfaces knitting.

IME stiching of this area does not help as right on the joint so always opens up.

I have seen much worse from wire. Alot longer wound.
They do heal in time. Just got to keep an eye on infection not setting in.
Looks nice a clean though at the moment.

oh are you a member of TWF, im sure i saw this on there
hello btw

hope hes healing up ok...i can remember one of my whippets had a wound like that and i must admit i just cleaned it up and eventually it heals, looking back back it would of healed quicker with a stitch or two

just makes sure he doesnt lick it too much as this can make it worse
