Hi guys. Just got my pony back from being out on loan and I am not very happy. He left looking amazing with a glossy coat, plenty muscle and a nice covering for winter. He has came home incredibly underweight, horrible fluffy coat and scabby skin!! He also has pale pink gums, feels clammy and is very very sad!!! He is normally the happiest pony about! I'm heartbroken! Iv got him stabled, as he doesn't seem happy being out, with haylage and water and giving him two very small feeds a day (don't think his belly used to food at mo by looks of him). He has also been wormed. Going to call the vet first thing in morning but can anyone suggest any tips.

You’re poor pony. How long was he out on loan for? I’d be getting on to them asking what on earth they have been doing (or not doing) to allow him to get in such a state!

I think you are doing the right thing getting the vet today and take guidance from them to see if there is anything physically wrong. They may want to do a blood test. If it’s just a matter of him being malnourished there are plenty of ways of getting him back up to weight but it’d also be wise to get his teeth looked at.

I think you’re doing the right thing until the vet can see him today then you can think of a management plan once you know what your dealing with. Just make sure feeds are little and often.

Hope you get him sorted and back to health!

Best tip - if you send a pony away loan/school etc make sure you stay in touch, have at least monthly updates and photos if you can't visit yourself. A lot of people unfortunately learn this the hard way and hindsight is great but not helpful! When did you last see the pony? There's a huge difference between sudden ill health and gradual deterioration. Maybe just needing worming/feeding/attention but maybe something physically going on which your vet should be able to confirm. Hope you get things sorted soon and have a happy outcome.
