My friends 7 yo mare came in from the field very depressed and lethargic on Monday. She lost quite a bit of weight over a couple of days and has been off her food ever since. She has the odd mouthful but nothing substantial and every now and then she almost chokes on whatever she's eating and coughs it all out.
The vet came out on Tuesday. Her temp is slightly high but other than that there were no obvious signs of what is wrong. Oh and v strange but she was producing clear liquid from her teets - she is not in foal as we have no stallions around for miles. Mare was given pain relief, anti-inflammatory and anti-biotic. Owner was left with daily anti biotics to give (by oral syringe as horse won't eat massive amounts). Bloods were taken and ran the next morning which showed she is anemic. Worm count done which came back clear.
She is still off colour and coming in each night for a rest and her anti biotics (she usually lives out 24/7/365)
Does anyone have any idea what this might be?
Thanks

Did the vet find any noise on her lungs at all?

It could be that she's caught some form or viral infection, the fact that it was not picked when the infection set in will mean you only picked on on this when she started to loose the weight due to her loss of appetite, if she's normally out 24/7 it's possible you will have noticed quite so easily that's she may of not been eating or just picking at bits.

Has her temperature come down to normal (if you know what that is, usually around 38c) sinse she's been on the antibiotics, is she on a weeks course?

she could have a blockage in throat possibly a tumer my friend hade one with the same signes.

Vet came out again last night and has diagnosed her with pneumonia. Poor girly :(
She's on 3 days of injected anti biotics and bute to bring her temp down and make her a bit more comfortable. The vet thinks that she has had a virus (a couple of horses had a mild cough) and it has just gone further with this mare. Not sure why it has developed into pneumonia in this mare alone but "it's just one of those things".
The owner of the poorly mare has had a real rough time with the YO who has been completely horrible! As soon as Promise is better she'll be moved with my horse to a more understanding yard!!
Thanks for your posts. Kenzo - you were so close to the answer, did you suspect pneumonia?? x

Hi everyone. Thanks for all your replies.
Promise is feeling better by the day now, she's still not 100% but certainly on the road to recovery.
monikirk - the vet hasn't mentioned myopathy.
chestnuttymare - yes the YO has been horrendous since Promise became ill. As soon as the vet gives the go ahead she'll be moved.
