4 ponies at the yard had flu and tet jabs today.
This evening my sec c was shivering violently all over, head hanging low and very miserable.
Phoned vet for advise and they said its very very rare for horses/ponies to get any side affects but not unheard of and that he was probably stressed and to ring her later.
Anyone else experienced anything similar after jabs.

Mine had a raging temperature and off her food for 24 hours after hers this year.
She had her hard feed but wasn't bothered with her haylage.

Another horse had similar symptoms, he was very, very low after his.

Both recovered quickly though.

It has happened to one who I look after.

She was injected and within a day or two came down with flu/virus type symptoms. She had never been ill with flu previous to the injection and was fit and well. The injection site also was very inflamed and sore.
She ended up having 3 months off work with what seemed to be classic symptoms of flu or a virus (lethargic, runny nose, dropping weight, shivering etc)
The vet ran tests but couldnt find anything but she has not been vaccinated against it again as she couldnt be ridden or compete and the vet didnt want to risk another reaction.

After an indepth talk with my vet I also decided not to get my boy done either and he is vaccinated for tetnus only, although he may be done in the next few weeks if he needs to have it for competitions!

I dont know if the injection was related to her becoming ill but it was a big coincidence, I would guess reactions are rare though as out of 60 horses done that week 1 got ill!

My sister's horse sweated up and was lethargic when he had his first flu jabs when we got him. He seems ok these days but we always give him a few days off and keep an eye on him after having his jab. At the end of the day they are getting a dose of flu albeit it v small and, like us they all react differently and some will show flu-like symptoms. I am sure he'll be fine in a couple of days.

My pony had a sever reaction to a penicillin jab last year (he's never had one before in the 15 years we've had him), it was very scary and I thought he was dying! He laid down for hours flat out, was shaking all over and sweating in patches, it was not pleasant at all, he wouldn't eat (v unusual) but the vet likened it to him feeling like he had a bad hangover and, providing he was drinking and therefore not at risk of dehydration he shoukd be ok. Thankfully he was! Think it was a surprise for the vet too as he said reactions are very rare.

Hope yours is feeling better soon!
