I've just been reading another thread about poo picking and was wondering how many poo's your horses (ponies) do in any 24 hr period. I (we) have 3 horses and 2 ponies who produce between 60 to 90 poo's in 24 hrs. Depending upon how lush the grass is.

On unlimited grass they do 15+ a day, but seeing as I spend around 10 months of the year limiting their input I like to keep them doing approx ten each per day. Any less makes them small and hard which can't be good for their guts! One will colic too if less fibre goes in.

My 2, with restricted intake (because they are porkers) produce between 8 - 12 each, per 24 hours.

I read an article that said between 8 - 12 is about right ..... any more than that and they are eating too much, any less and they don`t have enough to eat .... optimum intake should produce a dropping every 2 - 2.5 hours.

optimum intake should produce a dropping every 2 - 2.5 hours.

except when you're trying to worm count and they suddenly refuse to poo for 4 hours! argh! lol.

I do count them obsessively as I poo pick. It's like a bad habit that I can't stop.

We have 3 in our field and they do 2 heaped wheelbarrows in a 24hr period. I read somewhere but can't remember where that it was 1 poo per hour but discounted theory that during my time at a livery yard, 12 per 24hr period sounds far more reasonable :)

On the subject of horse poo. It reminded me of the first day i moved my horse in with four clydesdales. Their poo looks like there has been an elephant in there.

I guess I was really lucky. My girl would be in overnight with plenty of nosh (6pm to 8am approx) and I only ever picked up 3 poos in the morning. In the 17 years I had her she only stopped on a hack to poo 3 times and rarely did one at shows either, despite being there all day. Her poos were completely normal, not elephant sized, hard, soft or anything else. She just didn't do very many, that's all.

I lost her 12 months ago yesterday :(

Mine are in seperate paddocks which are poopicked every day soI know exactly what they produce!

My arab does roughly one poo an hour, on fresh grazing this goes up to 14-16 poos in 12 hours.

My ID x does 6-8 in 12 hours, but they are what I call elephant poos.

My shetlands do 8-10 poos in 12 hours.

My mini does them all in a very neat pile but its about half a small trug bucket in 12 hours.
