My wonderful little cob Poppy whom gave me back my confidence and joy of riding has colic. My Mum has her now and again she bought Mum back to riding after the loss of her previous horse. She is an angel the happiest, sunniest little soul with a heart of gold.

Mum called lastnight to say she'd gone down with colic. Vet came out and gave anti spas drugs but it didn't work. More drugs and blood tests again in the evening she was quieter but not picking up. Then first thing this morning vet out again to do tube down throat, drench to get some fluids in, internal from the back but no blockages there . They have done 2 lots of bloods, anti biotics and a needle to take fluid out her stomach for testing. Nothing has come back conclusive.

She is very unhappy and they have said that unless Mum wants her operated on we are coming to the end of the road. We are devastated. It £3000 for a straight forwards op and there are no guarentees of that. She is 16 years old and normally such a robust little lady.

They are coming back in an hour to give more drugs but if no improvement by tonight it's the end of the road and PTS.

I am shaking I cannot believe my beautiful girl whom I owe so much to is going to be taken away so young, far too early. What a way to start the New Year. Devastated .

Oh, poor you. Not a good start to the year, but for what its worth, there is still a window of time for Poppy to pick up, just keep hanging on in there and have some faith.
Lots of hugs to you. x

Oh i feel for you hun, what a crap start to the new year, keep your chin up and sending some positive vibes for Poppy i hope she picks up soon....lots of hugs to you and Poppy...K x

Oh, I'm so sorry to hear about Poppy being ill.
If it's any help to you, I've had two who needed colic surgery (both for rare conditions) and they are both still with me - one after 4 years.
I hope she improves without it, though.
S :D

Thank you guys I am just in a state of shock I was expecting to call Mum this morning and be told oh yes she is fine - you know Poppy bright as a button etc etc.

I just feel life can be so cruel - Mum had a crap time after loosing Sam and she vowed she would never sit on a horse again let alone own one. Poppy put a spring in her step and a smile on her face as she does to all she meets she just radiates sunshine. Why when things were going so well does life bite you in the arse :(

I am just praying that she improves but I am realistic that I am rather clutching at straws. It doesn't help Mum is back home in Oxfordshire and I am stuck here in Somerset. I just want to be there for them both and I can't which makes me feel even more rubbish.

oh hun i could have written this last month when i lost dear old freddy to colic. if you need to talk feel free to pm me.
sending get well vibes *****

I'm so sorry to hear this, what a way to start the new year.
Our elderly cob went down with colic, the assistant vet came out and gave pain-killer and muscle-relaxant drugs. She did seem to perk up but as the drugs wore off 24 hrs later, she started again. This time senior vet came out and administered the same treatment . Again she seemed better but went down again the next day. Senior vet came out again and said that if the treatment didn't work this time, he didn't think that there was anything else we could do. He didn't suggest it but we wouldn't have travelled her for an op -we owed her a dignified death at home.
Fortunately she didn't need any further treatment and although she lost a lot of condition and looked dreadful for over a month (and this was in summer) she is still with us 6 yrs later. We did decide to retire her then but she is now 29.
I do hope you get a similar happy ending!

Well we are still not out of the woods but she was a little brighter at 5pm when vet came again. They tubed her again to get some liquids in and she has started to eat a little. She's had a big dose of some anti colic drug ( all a blur can't remeber the name) and vet back out in the morning to look again.

They keep running bloods as vet is baffled it a very good equine vet hospital so we feel she is in good hands and trust their advice. They said she looked too well to call it a day this evening so Mum is going down every few hours through the night offering her small wet feeds and wet hay and holding the bucket up to encourage her to drink.

We are all routing for her and I am driving home tomorrow to just be ther and give her a huge hug and the same to my Mum.

Thank you so much guys for you support, vibes and hugs you are great x x x

Really so pleased to hear she is still fighting. Go Poppy, go. I hope with all my heart she continues to pick up and is fighting fit again before long.
