Poppy is 8 months old, and has been in season (heat) for 7 days now (or rather I have noticed a discharge for 7 days). Having never had a girl dog before I am totally ignorant about how she is feeling, and how we can help her get through the next week or so.

Am I right in thinking that this continues for about 3 weeks in total, how do I know when it has finished. We live out in the country, and I can only think of one farmers dog who is allowed to roam, so we are still able to allow her some freedom in the yard/small field. She seems v sleepy and a little unhappy compared to the little whirlwind we normally have.

I feel so mean when jumps onto the bed and I have to put her down again, she does her best to keep herself clean, but there are occasional spots on the floor/bedspread.

I an 99.9% sure that we will have her neutered after this one season (unless am really strongly advised against it), but in the meantime we have to get through the next two weeks.

Also does anyone know a good dog care website, as the merck vet manual is far too technical, and google didn't throw up any other sensible sounding sites, only the odd dog discussion board.

Thanks guys - I have great faith in you coming to the rescue with some advice/reassurance.

Anyone?? (before I go to bed - going back to work today after the Xmas break was v stressful, and it is snowing here so bed would be warmer than the kitchen).

If there is a bit about seasons, could you photocopy it for me and post it down?? I could always order a copy later on to read up before she goes to be spayed! I thought I could have found a decent website, but all either written for vets, or v basic which I already knew.

Many thanks

I was always advised to spay a bitch after it's first season unless you're going to breed form it. Poor wee Poppy, you do feel so mean putting them off bed/sofa etc

I would get her neatured after this after what Ive just been through, but I wont hijack Ill start another thread on that one.

She is normally allowed up as long as she is clean, so its so hard to get her to understand why she isn't allowed up. Sat on my knee on a towel last night.

You're a star - thats most of what I wanted to know contained on one page. She seems to have stopped spotting as much now, which is a blessing, though is always licking herself clean.

Now I just need to speak to the farmer down the road who will not keep his farm dog tied up. Maybe OH will go tomorrow. She normally sees it off with lots of barking, but don't want her hormones to get the better of her.
