Random question time ? Can I feed my dogs uncooked porridge oats (sprinkled over their usual food) as extra bulk/calories? I know they won’t have much nutritional value so it would be to assist with putting a bit of extra weight on the dogs.

I only ask because the pointy hounds are always skinny and I’ve acquired a bag of organic porridge oats that I won’t eat myself ?

This isn't going to help you, but my two once broke into the kitchen and ate a whole packet of oats. They were like stuffed sausages when we got back and the, ahem, end product was very consistent for a couple of days :D

When we lived in the far north (way above inverness!) my mum always fed the dogs porridge for breakfast (they were usually only fed once a day) I have no idea why she chose to adopt this policy just cos we were in Scotland but the dogs definately approved!! We also used to get porridge for breakfast with cream and sugar/honey and I still think it one of life's great treats. :)

I give my boy 2 tablespoons of oats a day for extra, cheap calories, but I soak them with his kibble for 20-30 minutes. Apparently lard and mashed potato are good for adding weight to greyhounds, but I haven't tried it myself. Porridge was my saviour when he had the runs a while back. I only had one bag of rice, and it wasn't in the shops due to lockdown. I thought I'd try making porridge (with water), and it worked as well as rice, if not better. I cooked a large quantity of oats at a time, and kept the resulting gloop in the fridge, rather than cooking it twice a day. It looked pretty revolting, but he absolutely loved it! It was less faff than rinsing and straining oats too.

I must admit - the bag of oats went into the cupboard and I promptly forgot about them ?

This is a very timely reminder, the boys can always do with a little extra condition - I’ll cook them up some porridge and see how they like it ?
