I am thinking of moving my horse soon and I thought I would try a stable mirror to see if it will help him settle into his new home. Someone I know has just put hers up along a side wall as that is where her horse stands to rest. Mine however stands along the back of his stable and so I was thinking of putting it there. The only thing is that is going to be opposite his door and I'm sure I've read it isn't a good idea to do that.

Anyone have any advice?

I bought one for my young highly strung KWPN last year and he attacked it and ripped it of the wall!

I replaced it with a metal one (first was plastic) and it has helped, he now licks his friend!

I just wondered whether anyone knows if it really is a bad idea to position them opposite a door.

LOL! my beastie has booted her mirror a few times, neccesitating patch-up jobs, but most of the time she stands by it and slobbers all over it.
They do say not to position the mirror near to the stable occupant's food, and as you say, not opposite the door.
Depending on your stable layout, you may be left with not too many options as to where to place it!

It needs to be a certain height off the ground, so that the horse can easily see his own reflection while his head is in a relaxed position.
Mine is placed alongside the door at about 2 1/2 feet off the ground.
The mirror companies usually give good information on placement.

Thanks for that. One of the other reasons I was considering putting it on the back wall is because 1 wall is taken up with haynet and manger, the other would be next to his manger so that is a no go, and the other is the side he normally double barrells during one of his gymnastic efforts.... Going to have to have a good think!

I put mine where the pony could get a reflection along the yard if he didn't have his head over the door so that he could see the others coming and going and their heads when they were over their doors. I had a friend hold it, another one pretend to be the pony looking into it and I walked up and down in the yard until they said they got a better reflection if that makes any sense! Pony was on 10 weeks box rest and I'm sure it settled her, she obviously loved it as I had to polish off all her snoggy saliva every morning!
