I posted a few days ago about my mare being realy full of beans and stressy on hacks, bad to handle and she is normally so sweet and chilled. she is 4 and has just come into season for first time this year today and was walking and weeing at everythign, mares, geldings, and a shetland colt. she was better handling than she has been but broke free in the yard and cleared off back to the boys. any advice on what might help??? she did this last year but seemed to get so mcuh better that i didnt notice when she was in season or not later in the year but cant remember if she got better or just stopped coming into season. Vet??? all other bits, teeth, baxck etc all o.k.

Ask your vet about marbling, my friend in Canada says it's worked well on her very seasonal mare, not sure how much it's used over here but worth a question

mares tend to go through a few quite extreme seasons as they settle into their rythm in the spring - mine was all over the place today - but they tend to become less extreme or even noticeable later in the year.

might be worth keeping a diary of her behaviour - vet would want to know too if you hope to use anything to 'help' with her seasons.

most mares behaviour also improves as they mature - my mare is rising 11 and is hugely improved from when she was 4 (thank goodness!)

regumate can be used also to get mares throughtheir first erratci seasons until they settle inot their rythm - i am sure someone of here will have experience of this - and then worth talking to your vet.

mine discussed regumate and marbling with me as possibles but have decided to stick with it without these as she is improving year on year.

might be worth getting her ovaries scanned to see if anythings wrong there?

when my mare started her seasons after i bought her she was a nightmare! bolshy, bad tempered and with her size she was getting dodgy to handle, turned out she doesnt have a proper season due to a problem with her ovaries, the hormones just pile up so she got the worst pmt ever! she was also in pain over her back which made her unrideable (bronco).

after the ovarian scan i tried regumate, which worked well but wasnt classed as a long term solution. so last year she had her marble fitted, this makes the uterus "think" shes pregnant so her seasonal hormones calmed down. it usually lasts the term of a horses normal pregnancy. i would definatly recommend it, shes back to her usual angelic self (well most of the time lol) and better still she no longer has the back pain

hope this helps

my friend tried oestress when her mare was like this at the start of the year and she said that there was a noticeable difference in days :)

hope this helps
