Possible allergy? Has anyone seen anything like this?

My horse has come out in light patches on his back. He has some white marks from a badly fitting saddle, but now he has these light patches appearing. They started on his back but now seem to have moved to his sides as well. I've tried to highlight the areas on the picture. Could it be an allergy to washing powder? I use a Nuumed wool numnah. Could he be allergic to it? I've started washing it using Nuuwash (previously I used a non bio washing powder. I've also washed him with warm water and hibbiscrub. Any other ideas?

Hi S, not sure I use Nuumed all the time, not had a reaction and use it for my dogs stuff too, will look out for the replies, hope you are well, was very tempted to move to yours recently when I saw there was a space

The only allergy reactions I've seen in regards to soap powder etc, were nasty itchy scabby hives, covering the whole area, eg numnah patch / whole body from a rug.

Lighter patches are normally pressure marks in my experience, are you sure the saddle fits now? and isnt tipping back? Is the girth or stirrup leather / irons rubbing ?
He seems to have sensitive skin with all the white marks, to me pressure seems more likely than allergy

Not too sure if this is any help but my mare will come out in patches very similar if I don't wash her off extremely well and dry her after exercise - she seems to have a skin reaction to sweat ! Looking at the lines this does seem to follow the saddle and girth lines - This reaction in my mare only started last summer and I have had her for 6 years - Since I have been washing and drying her after all exercise I have had no problems at all - Just for interest she is black in colour so no sense ie chestnut more sensitive skin / pink skin etc

The jumping saddle caused the obvious white marks on his back. I stopped using it as soon as it was apparent there was a problem, about 6 wks ago now. I only ride in my dressage saddle now (with a large nuumed half wool dressage square underneath). The dressage saddle has been checked by two different saddlers (obviously not the same one that told me the jumping saddle fitted). They are both happy with the fit. It could be possible that these could be pressure sores from the jumping saddle, although some of the marks seem lower down. Scallywags, how would you stop stirrup leathers rubbing? Is this a problem you've come across before? I could put a girth sleeve on, just in case. I've been washing him with hibbiscrub, I might just carry on and see whether it helps.

Since it's where your tack fits, my money would be on pressure/sensitivity underneath it. Hibiscrub, unless very dilute can be a tad harsh, especially on already 'upset' skin.

Vet and saddle fitter would be my advice.

As previous post....the saddler has already been. The jumping saddle that caused the white marks is not being used anymore. The dressage saddle that is being used has been checked by two different saddlers and fits. I have spoken to vet on the phone and he recommended washing with hibbiscrub.

I have seen rubs from, leathers, irons and spurs.
I'd make sure your leathers are soft, and you concentrate on a stable lower leg (I dont know how you ride, but unstable leg aids, can cause this)
