I got a call at work on Monday to say they'd had to bring Josh in from the field - he had been playing with the next-door horse, stuck his head under the fence to play-bite at the other horse and brought the fence down. He also had a graze on his nose next to the nostril about 2" long - once they had cleaned all the blood off it was really nothing.

During the day the front of his nose swelled up like a boxer - a SF with a roman nose! - about 2" above the nostrils, just about where a cavasson noseband would sit. He has never had any discharge, is eating well, no change in character etc, I've been riding him (without a noseband) and he has been 100% normal.

The swelling has gone down quite a lot since Monday but is still there - he'll let me prod at it firmly and doesn't object, the swelling seems hard not puffy. I was wondering whether the end of the nose bone could have been splintered a bit, and whether I should call the vet? I don't suppose there is anything they could do even if that had happened though, and Josh is def not in any pain or behaving any differently. Any views please? Thanks!

I think a similar thing happened to lzt's horse on here not long ago. Maybe if you pm her she could advise. Good luck anyway.

Hi have never come across this kind of thing before but will just say if you think its healing well id just see how it goes. If it starts to look infected i would call vet straight away. The one reason i say this is my horse Simon has had a broken splintered rib, and bone fragments splinter off his Tempero mandibular joint. Both became quickly infected due to the floating bone fragments and he had to have major surgery to both sites at Leahurst (major piggybank emptier) If there are broken fragments they will need to be scrapped out.

Thanks, yes I am checking the area for heat and discharge - it is slightly warmer than the rest of his head, but I would expect that if it was soft tissue damage too. I'll keep monitoring it - no piggy bank to empty for me!

My horse fractured his nose once. It swelled up and bled abit, but with time it healed fine. I also rode without a nose band. It was a while ago now, but I dont remember getting the vet out, as you say, theres not much they can do, prob just say give him some bute!

Hi. Did this ever resolve itself? The exact same thing has happened to my Daughters pony. Thanks. X
