Morning all, I'll try and keep this as brief as possible.

My 22 year old TB gelding is in from about 10pm until about 6am, come rain or shine. Yesterday morning his nearside hind was a little puffy, he was a bit off on it walking to the field, but the puffiness soon went down and he was fine within an hour.

I brought him in last night, around half ten, but didn't get out to turn him out until just before 8am, his nearside hind has tripled in size, and he has fluid oozing from some of the skin. He's also lame. I phoned the vet, and th nurse spoke to the vet who said to cold hose, turn him out in the little paddock and try and get him moving and I'm waiting for the vet to phone me back re; a call out as he's going in the opposite direction. I'm hoping he calls back soon, I may phone the surgery again to 'check they have the right number' and *hopefully* gently remind them I'm still waiting. Though I know he's a busy man....

The poor old boy's out there as miserable a sin. I keep bunging baby in the pram and moving him round a bit, do you think I should cold hose him again? Or maybe massage in a downwards direction to see if that eases him at all whilst I'm waiting for my call and appointment?

Does this sound like severe cellulitis to you?

Yes, cold hose for at least 15 minutes, then try to get him walking about gently. Do you have any bute about that you could give him? I always had to treat my horse's lymphangitis with homeopathy (its a long story!) and found Apis Mel 30c totally brilliant.

Certainly sounds like it - poor old boy! One of mine gets this with any small scratch on his leg!

I would keep him turned out & just wait for the vet - a few shots of antibiotics and he'll be brand new in no time. It is very painful for them so I wouldn't massage it but the cold hosing can't do any harm.

Don't worry, I'm sure he will be fine.

Hi, thanks for your replies. The vet came out, it is indeed Cellulitis. He gave him a pain killer shot and an antibiotic shot and from tomorrow he's on one sachet of Trimediazine Plain for five days and two sachets of bute per day. He said I should start to see improvement within the next 2-3 days and if there's none by sunday to call him out again. This should be fun as Rockie hates being out with a passion-you actually have to drag him out of bed in a morning if it's so much as overcast!

I'm just going to go in search of more management advice.
