Our 9 year old CKC been to vet with sore on top of paw. He gets in such a state at vets they have not really sorted it. He’s got antibiotics and pain killers . We have pulled some hair out of it and it looks like there’s more I n there, we can’t seem to pull it out. We are soaking in Epsom salts, poulicing it and putting magnesium sulphate on it. He can’t be put under anasthetic because of his heart. Any suggestions. It looks really sore now and he gets himself in a right tizzy when we try to pull it out

Stop pulling at it.
Leave him be, let the medications do their work and reaccess when its not painful anymore.
if its a true ingrown hair- once the pain and inflammation from the secondary infection comes down it will be easier to remove. Ingrown hairs are pretty uncommon though compared to some of the other skin issues that occur on the feet.
If the pain and inflammation remain after meds get him sedated at the vet and they will lance it if needed..I'd be very surprised if he gets to the lancing and sedation route though.
Most of these heal fine with medication because many are not true ingrown hairs...more inflamed infected skin with matted hair stuck to the site so its sore when your trying to pull at it.
Regardless of underlying cause give it time for the drugs to work and leave it alone so your not causing further trauma and then reaccess at the end of the course....and if hes licking..cone of shame. Moisture from licking, poultices etc aren't helpful if the skin is infected inflamed and broken already and can make things worse.

Time drugs and patience will heal a lot of things if we are able to wait it out.Theres no reason to rush with a slight infection or ingrown hair on the toe esp when its a cavvy with a heart issue...sedation should be a last resort. Get rid of the infection and inflammation and the pain will decrease enough to make things manageable in most cases.

Thanks Aru for your advise. It looks much better today, just a clean looking hole. He has got a collar on for when it was unbandaged. Vet told daughter he could have a calmer but not sedation. Really appreciate your advise.
