Possible Loan Advice?

I am 23, have been riding 6 months now and I am just addicted. Someone suggested to me to look into getting a loan horse or pony & get private lessons to help me learn and improve more.

I have the funds to pay for a loan horse/pony however I don't sadly have time for the yard jobs/mucking out (I know these are important tasks but I don't have the time to fit them into my schedule right now). I know it seems like a crime LOL but is it possible to just loan a horse/pony without doing the jobs and just paying to ride? I guess it would be down to the owner but has anyone done anything similar before?

I have respect for people that can do all the horsey jobs multiple times a day and that's the only thing putting me off getting a loan in the future.

Thanks xx

I would advise you to get at least another six months of riding experience first. You can have private lessons using a riding school animal. Then move on to being a sharer. Sharing is when you pay the owner for regular use of their horse or pony. It does not always involve doing jobs. Loaning is a much bigger step than sharing, and involves being responsible for the animal's care, either by doing all of the jobs yourself or by paying for assistance such as part or full livery.

Depending on what your budget is for keeping a horse then full livery means you pay the yard to look after the horse and you just groom and ride. This might be an option.

I would however advise that 6 months is probably a bit soon. Keep taking private lessons at a good school for another year or so, minimum weekly ideally twice a week.

Had several sharers and horse was always on full livery. We charged 1/7th of weekly livery charge per day which was a bargain as that didn't include shoeing, rugs, insurance, vet bills..... Horse was ideal for novice rider. But I would agree that you would need more than 6 months experience.

As an owner I would always prefer the consistency of care provided by yard staff than expecting a sharer to do it.

I’m afraid I’m another who would say six months of experience is too little.
I would wait a while and then look for a share rather than a loan when you’re more experienced.

Looking at your other post, I think I would prioritise finding a good quality riding school and having lessons regularly then think again about a loan/share at a later date. This could include private lessons, there's no need to jump ahead to loan/share if private lessons are something you're hoping to do.

Two of the three shares I have had were on full livery, and these understandably cost more than those on DIY livery. I think I've been quite lucky to have found them. It might narrow the pool of potential horses and you might need to travel further but they are out there when the time is right for you to start looking.
