I've been away for 3 days & left my sister in charge of the horses. Went to do them tonight& Dolly (12.2 section A) is acting as though she's been sedated. Sis says she got confused with the supplements on Friday & gave her a heaped 50ml scoop of heavy mag ox. She says she was fine on sat & Sunday.

Is it possible that the mag ox can have this effect? She's been on it for ages, but at the correct dose obviously. I just can't think of anything else it could be. She's totally out of it. Just been back to check her again. No other symptoms - just very lethargic. Any ideas? :-(

From (albeit fairly old) studies, overdosing of magnesium oxide has been shown to have no adverse effects in horses.

(Hintz and Schyrver 1973 article but can't find it online)

In theory she should just have wee'd it away. My guess would be that she has a virus which is coincidental and will be over it in a day or three

Horses can excrete excess magnesium (unlike iron) and she'll pee it out.

I've been advised to double their dose in response to certain issues in the past so I wouldn't worry.
If lack of magnesium causes agitation - perhaps O/D makes them stoned?;)

Thanks everyone. Im hoping you're right Oberon. Although I've just been googling & I've now got it into my head that she's starting with Atypical Myopathy. Mum says Im over-reacting & seeing things that aren't there. Gonna finish my tea & go back again. :-(
