Our pony has started sneezing, coughing and has a slight nasal discharge. However she is fine in herself! Tonight, I discovered that the field backing on to hers (masked by trees in-between) is rapeseed. Has anyones horse experienced an allergy to rapeseed before?

Not mine but one on a yard I worked on. Luckily we were upwind most of the time & it wasn't that close by, but hacking past was horrid for her. Nose net did the trick for her. Incidentally I get hayfever symptoms from it too, that clear as soon as i'm away from it.

Could well be the rapeseed. Some horses really dislike the smell. I am surrounded by fields of rapeseed and it irritates my nasal passages!

Funnily enough as we were hacking round farm tonight, my throat felt really tight and my head felt fuzzy although felt fine as soon as I got home! We have got pony club jumping rally on Tuesday so it will be interesting to see how she is then! She is now on aloevera juice as recommended on previous thread and have put Vaseline inside her nostrils!

Huge amount of horses with this allergy suffering in the last two weeks. Can vary from mild nasal discharge to severe respiratory distress. Or even a collapsed Fores fighting for its breath. Emergency tracheostomy, steroids (in a heavy cob!) and multiple respiratory drugs given and horse back on its feet and looking for food half hour later. Best to get in top of it early, though management is more difficult than with dust allergies.
