You will prob find that it is degenerative- had a lovely Clover Hill mare who had a whopping great ringbone at 6 yo, she was sound as a pound, hacked and hunted occasionally, she did have other conf problems which almost certainly contributed to the ring bone and threw a nasty splint high up the leg and that ended her ridden career.
See how it goes, they are all so different!

thanks its a hard one with him because the vet is very unsure as to what the x-ray showing the x-ray was from aug 2006 and hes been sound since lookng at the x-ray myself its a tiny speckle which does not appear to be near any joints i hope he will be ok as hes a 17hh irish draught and would do well in ridden hunter classes but i dont want to cause him problems feel left in limbo with vet being unsure , my farrier says to treat him as normal and see how he goes . No signs of any lump around coronet band .

My old XC horse had ringbone - the long pastern and the short pasterns fused together. He was never lame during the transition and once it had totally fused although he walked with a strange gait, he was totally sound and could do pretty much anything. I used to XC him over 10 miles courses about 3 to 4 times per week with no problems whatsoever.....but I never did higher than 3'6" courses just incase.

I gave him Solvitax or something, can't remember the name.

I sold him when I emigrated and he has been with his new owner for almost 3 years and is competing at Le Trec now. He will be 16 years old this year and is still going strong by all accounts.

Here is a picture of him - you may be able to see the lump although it was on the inside of his off-hind (the white foot):

And this was him jumping:

As I say, I always kept to below 3' 6" just to be on the safe side and I didn't trot for any length of time on roads.....but he was used to riding out for many hours most days and he never took a lame step in the years I owned him.

I bought a horse aged 15 with pronounced ringbone. She is 21 and still going strong and doing everything. Not one day has she been lame. I dont trot her on the roads and am always careful of doing my faster work on good services.

I knew about this when I bought her, she also had really bad windgalls, which due to care have reduced over the years to almost nothing.

Thanks everyone for your information , couldnt get on computer yesterdayso sorry for delay , Tia your horse is gorgeous . Its encouraging to hear of other horses with definate ringbone that still carry on as normal , I bought Max knowing there was a slight chance he had ringbone but his old owner made it sound like all he could do was light hack . I've had horses for years and had a gelderlander x ID who helds his tail to one side and swivelled on his right hind leg plus had windgalls this did not stop him doing anything at all hes 16 now and still sound . I decided to sell due to trying for a baby but got to have IVF and really missed having a horse so bought max as a horse i could have fun rides on 3-4 x's a week but he's so nice it would be great to take him to shows as hes only rising 8 but with his old owner painting a dark picture i was unsure of what he could or could'nt do so thanks guys for your info , il treat him as a normal and enjoy him . He's on good feed Naf's SuperFlex which has high levels of MSM etc in it / Biotin for his feet / Cod liver oil i don't trot him on hard ground so think im doing everything right to help him .
