Possible swollen saliva glands

My 3 y-o NF pony has developed 2 swollen lumps under her jaw where you would get strangles abcesses. She has now had these 2 lumps for nearly 3 weeks. I have had the vet out to her who put her on a 5 day course of bute 1 sachet twice a day, but things are no better. I then brought her in off the grass as she was previously out 24hrs and kept her in for 5 days but still these lumps persist (thinking that she might have 'grass mumps due to sugar levels in grass'. I have the vet comming back out again tomorrow to reassess this problem. I have had to cancel 2 shows because of these lumps. She seems fit and well in herself, eating and drinking OK. She has had blood taken and this came back normal. She dosent mind you touching these lumps and you can give them a good squeeze. She has never had anything like this before and has lived in this field for the past couple of years. This is very frustrating as i cannot take her to any shows due to the nature of the location of these lumps, i am likely to get thrown off the showground as people will fear that she has strangles or some other contagion. Does anyone have any suggestions.

Same thing!

Vet palputated, said salivery glands, not lymph nodes or gutteral pouch issues.

Horse is happy and putting on condition.

She has started her horse on Global Herbs Skratch and Restore and has seen a slight improvement... they also recomended one called Weeze, but each product is about £30 and there are limits!

Keep posting about this because it is interesting. I will post any updates on mates ned.
 
Thanks for this I will ask my vet about these products. I am stumped with regards to these lumps as i thought that grass related glandular issues would resolve once the horse was removed off the pasture. This has not been the case with my filly.

The vet did hint that if all being well clinically and no other symptoms he might indicated just leaving things to mother nature. Surely this will then prevent me from showing her in-hand. I did read somone had competed their horse at dressage with these lumps, but i suppose you dont have a judge looking close up at your horse. My vets have strongly advised me not to take my filly anywhere for political reasons.

I shall wait until tomorrow but will post another report up once the vet has been.

Hi Can I ask where these strangle abcesses apear as my mare came in with a lump by her
throatabout the size of a two pence coin with some heat in. I asked a couple of very knowledgeable people and they said it looks like a fly bite as it is moveable under the skin. She is fine in herself and is eating and drinking.
 
my horse has always had small lumps between his jaw bones and had them thoroughly investigated about 10yrs ago because people were commenting on them at shows. nothing bad was found and the lumps remaining whether he was out or in on complete box rest. just recently i noticed the lumps have massively enlarged - he now has golfball size lumps between his jaw bones in the area of the submandibular lymph nodes. he does get grass glands but these always come up in the angle of the jaw where the parotid salivary glands are. the lumps between his jaw bones are very different. the stud where he's liveried are worried about strangles and have been hot poulticing the lumps, but nothign has come out, he is well in himself although has lost a little weight recently (he is 22) and has been quidding a bit. he has no fever or runny nose and has been in the same field with the same horses all winter. i dont see it can be strangles and am more worried about his teeth, so going to sedate him on friday and have a really thorough look around his mouth, stick a needle in his lumps and probably take some blood as well. it's a mystery at the moment.
 
Vet just been again yes these are indeed lumps due to the saliva glands being over active at this time of year. He has given me a report so i can take the pony to shows. lumps are under the jaw line and are large marble sized.
 
My horse always gets hamster checks as I call it from the grass. She does have a runny nose but she has always had it. I think if this lump doesn't go down I will try to poultice it.
 
Just to mention that my horse had 3 lumps under her jaw for a month before being diagnosed with Cancer. She was 13. They were painful for a couple of days when they first appeared and then not at all for about a month before she stopped eating(plus other symptoms) and was PTS. The vets were pretty stumped for a couple of days before she died. She has lymphosarcoma...
Apart from those first and last few days she was her usual bright and chirpy self.
