As posted earlier - had a bit of a whoopsie with TB and ISH yesterday which resulted in them galloping flat out through a couple of fields of barley without their riders (me and OH). ISH came back absolutely fine. TB has scrapes to the underside of his fetlock in front and a small slice on the inside of his near hind.

His fetlock has swollen up as has his pastern on his off fore. He is sound at walk - haven't been able to trot him up because noone been around. He seems a bit sore on it and is pointing foot very slightly when cold hosing it. Heat seems to be on inside of fetlock.

Could he have twisted it galloping flat out over rough ground or even (god forbid) put his foot in a hole? Or would it be something more sinister?

I've given him bute and cold hosed. Scrapes all cleaned up. I've had to turn him back out in his field because he goes nuts in his stable at this time of the year and I worry he'd do more damage rolling constantly (his anxiety thing).

I thought it best to turn him out so he can just mooch about. He's very quiet in the field and gets stiff if left in.

Hi hun. Anything's possible where TB legs are concerned! But when you say "twisted" do you mean the human equivalent of say a twisted ankle? If so, just to note that human twisted ankles are usually to do with damage to the tendons and ligaments that hold the whole ankle together. If your boy has damaged a tendon, it might need watching carefully to make sure it doesn't get worse and, pretty obviously, not to ride him until you're 100% certain all is ok. Fingers crossed x

As you will see from my post re 'how many come sound' I have got a mare with a DDFT problem. She did it galloping round the field like an idiot and the filling in her leg was exactly in the same place as yours. I would keep a very close eye on it and if the swelling and foot pointing doesn't go away in a couple of days I would get it scanned down by the pastern just in case. I am now paranoid about this injury but my mare wasn't diagnosed for 3 weeks and in that time I was told to ride her, give her lots of bute and turn her out and I'm sure I did so much damage in that time just because I didn't know what was wrong. Sorry to sound depressing but would hate anyone to end up with my problem. Fingers crossed.

The heat had largely gone this morning although still swollen - just looks like a fat ankle.

I am going to ring the vet if its not done by Thursday - I certainly won't be riding him that's for sure.

I have ummed and aahed about keeping him in and sedating him but he's far happier mooching around the field and I think will come to less harm than being incarcerated in prison - his version of what a stable is. He's got spavin and has just come back into work from a back injury so is better outside.

I know he reacts more than other horses to injuries because he is a TB but I'm just not sure that this is a typical bang or something else. Whatever happens, the vet will come and see him. I want the vet to scan him when he does come so was going to wait the few extra days so he can bring the scanner at the same time. Vet prefers to wait 5 days or so for swelling to go down before he scans them.

Will keep updating!!
